The Story

The Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon has that warm, classic Californian flair to it – loads of ripe and jammed black fruits, smooth tannins and mellow acidity. The wines are always big and as Doug Shafer points out “Napa wines are big wines, no point hiding it.” Still baring the Stag’s Leap District’s smooth style, with tannins that are always very gentle and fine-grained, the Hillside Select is voluminous, but in a discreet manner, making i...

Wine Information

Possibly the Cabernet Sauvignon of the vintage is Shafer’s 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select. Last year I thought it was a strong effort, but it’s even better now that it’s been bottled. Written Notes

Good looking normal size bottle and is in a perfect condition. Colour is ruby red, and looking bright and deep. On the nose it is wide, refined, fresh and pure. The taste is fresh, full, vigor, perfumed, firm, full-bodied, with balanced and complex structure. On the palate it is layered and has dried-fruit, pepper, smoky, tobacco, blackcurrant, leather, herbs, earthy and meaty flavours. The finish is long, extensive, lingering, pure and spicy. This wine is intelligent, transparent and sexy. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 10-15 years and decant at least 2h before tasting.
