The Story

Masseto was born ‘almost by chance’ in 1986 when it was decided to vinify the Merlot from the Masseto vineyard alone as it ‘promised well’. This small, exceptional and legendary cru has soon become a collector’s item sold in auctions all over the world. The first vintage was called very simply ‘Merlot’ but, from 1987, it has taken on the name of its vineyard ‘Masseto’.

The Masseto vineyard is a unique place. Blessed with the generosity of a...

Written Notes

Vintage Report: Characterized by a dry winter and a severe spring frost that naturally thinned the crop. A long, hot summer followed with almost no rainfall from June to September. However, the deep Pliocene blue clay soils acted like a sponge, supplying the vines with just enough water to prevent shutdown. This resulted in exceptionally low yields of intensely concentrated fruit.

Tasting Notes: The latest legendary release on the market. A mysterious, deeply concentrated, and youthful wine that slowly unravels layer by layer in the glass. It shows precise, tightly-wound notes of blue flowers, black currants, graphite, and subtle, integrated vanilla oak. The mouthfeel is remarkably crisp, fresh, and tightly coiled, packed with energetic tannins that indicate a brilliant, long-term future.

Blueberries and black olives with violets and hints of sage, as well as rosemary flowers. Full and powerful with lots of fruit and vanilla on the palate. A rich and flavorful red, yet held together beautifully. Muscular and powerful. Needs five or six years to come together. Give it time.
