History

Good wine and good food are our passions; hiking together through the vineyards, tasting the grapes and touching the leaves on the vines is what gives us joy. Cooking together and enjoying authentic wines motivates us constantly to keep working on our wines. Family has been the hub of the winery for many decades and family is still the centre of the estate today.

We are the seventh generation in a long line of vintners. We have made it our quest to get back to our roots: rediscovering the unique position our vineyards hold in the Mittelhaardt region and unlocking their full potential. The conversion of the estate to bio-dynamic production methods and the excitement our wines generate in markets throughout the world are the pillars of our work.

It is the 19th century. The cousins Johann Martin and Prof. Dr. Louis Häusser regularly met at Weingut Buhl in Deidesheim to discuss the democratic ideas of the times. But not only… Probably inspired by the surroundings as well as the local wine, they soon decided to purchase a vineyard of their own, thereby laying the cornerstone of today’s estate. Henriette Häusser, a granddaughter of the founder, married Eduard Christmann.

The estate is named after their son, Arnold Christmann. To put it another way: passion and creativity have been part of our history from the outset – and ever since. To this today, the estate has been in the hands of the Christmann family, now in the 7th generation, and the name still stands for top growths that are second to none.

Vineyards

We have the great pleasure of working in one of the few landscapes in the world that can produce excellent dry Riesling and Burgunder (Pinot) wines. Rather than breathlessly following every trend and new style of wine, we can concentrate on our goal: capturing the taste experience that can only be found in the Pfalz, the Mittelhaardt region, in our vineyards in Gimmeldingen and Königsbach. We strive to make a classic treasure even better.

For generations, the vintners in our family have inherited the estate from their parents, knowing that they are temporary care-takers, managing the land carefully for it to be passed on to the next generation. Our aim is to abide by this tradition: making what is good, better.

We know that there is nothing that can be added in the cellar that can enhance the quality of our grapes. It is instead the biodynamic cultivation methods that form the basis for the production of truly individual vineyards and wines. This is the path we have chosen in order to achieve full harmony between the vines and their surroundings, leading to wines made with grapes that are full of flavor.

The foundation for this is organic production, enhanced by the rules and rites of biodynamics (certified through the Lacon Institute- DE-Öko 003). For many years now, we have used no herbicides, insecticides or synthetic chemical substances.

Winemaking

Today we cultivate 22 hectares of vineyards in Gimmeldingen, Königsbach, Ruppertsberg and Deidesheim. Although the vineyards all lie within 5km of each other, stretched out along the edge of the Haardt mountainsside, they have their own micro-climates and specific soils.

As is the tradition in the Palatine region, Riesling is the dominant variety, comprising nearly ¾ of the vines. The rest of our portfolio is divided between Spätburgunder (pinot noir, 13% of the vines), and Weissburgunder (pinot blanc, 8% of our vines).
