History
Since 1994, with passion and commitment, the Feray family has preserved and embellished this castle to make it one of the remarkable historic sites of the Loire Valley.
The vineyard, one of the oldest in Touraine, is today ranked among the most prestigious wine properties in the Loire Valley.
The domain covers 130 hectares across the hillside and the valley.
The history of Moncontour
The feudal building has survived the centuries and has seen the residence of numerous personalities from the court and the arts. Dependence on the bishopric of Tours under Saint Martin in the 4th century, the current building dates from the Renaissance and was erected by King Charles VII who offered it to Agnes Sorel, his Lady of Beauty.
Partly burnt down during the French Revolution, the building was rehabilitated; then, in 1846, the local writer Honoré de Balzac wished to acquire it, desired it in vain, to live there with his fervent admirer and wife Evelyne Hanska.
On June 10, 1846, he wrote to his wife and the famous formula: "Moncontour is my predilection" was read in this letter.
