History

Proprietors: Giacomo, Mariacristina and Mariavittoria Oddero.
We have a land, and we have roots which go back to the end of 18th century. We have a story to tell, of our family, our cellars and our vines, located in some of the most important sites in the Barolo and Barbaresco zones. We tell our story to all the wine-lovers who come to visit us and taste our wines.

It is hard to say for sure exactly when our winemaking began. 18th century muncipal records show that the vineyards and estate have belonged to the Oddero family for centuries. Documents, notarial deeds and pictures can take us back as far as our ancestors Lorenzo, Luigi and Giovanni Battista (1794-1874), who between the 18th and 19th centuries started making wine from the grapes of our vineyards located around La Morra, a picturesque hill-town with views out over the whole Alta Langa.

It is thanks to them that Oddero wine got its start in life, first sold in small casks and demijohns, then from 1878 in bottles. In 1911 Giacomo Oddero, grandfather of the current Giacomo, took part proudly with his Barolo to the International Exhibition of Turin, presenting the wine at the tasting held by “Circolo Enofilo Subalpino”, on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Unity of Italy.

After 150 years of activity, the historical winery is run today by sisters Mariacristina and Mariavittoria, who are passionate about wine. They took over from their father Giacomo and are assisted by their children, whose youth gives freshness and innovation to the wisdom of tradition.

Knowledgeable partners work together with them.

Vineyards

Oddero owns approximately 35.00 hecatres of vineyards, of which 16.50 are Nebbiolo for Barolo vineyards. As part of an old family tradition, Oddero also still owns 5 hectares of land devoted to growing hazelnuts, the delicious prized IGP (Protected Geographical Indication) tonda e gentile (round and gentle hazelnuts) of the Langhe.

Poderi e Cantine Oddero is proud to count among its vineyards some of the best sôrì (sunny sites) of the Langhe: Vigna Rionda in Serralunga d’Alba; Brunate in La Morra; Mondoca di Bussia Soprana in Monforte d’Alba; Rocche di Castiglione, Fiasco and Villero in Castiglione Falletto, as well as Gallina in Neive, Bricco Chiesa, Roggeri, Capalot, San Biagio in Santa Maria in La Morra, Collaretto in Serralunga d’Alba.

The winery also owns the Cascina Fiori in Trezzo Tinella, where Moscato d’Asti DOCG Cascina Fiori is grown, and Barbera d’Asti DOCG Superiore vineyards in Vinchio, in the province of Asti, a historic area for this variety.

The Winery

The Oddero winery is located in Santa Maria, a hamlet of La Morra, at Borgata Tetti 28. One part is used for winemaking, while the other historic section, dating back to the end of the 18th century, is used for maturing and ageing the wines.

Every generation has contributed to the buildings, while keeping intact the L-shaped outline, characteristic of Langhe farmhouses. The wines are vinified in stainless steel and oak, while the refinement takes place in Slavonian, Austrian and French oak barrels.

We are building our new cellar

We have almost completed our new cellar extension. Here, we will store our bottles for further ageing before selling them to the public, as well as create a historical tour of our Reserve wines. The project has been followed by architects Mariateresa Bruno and Giorgio Sordo, with the Construction Company Fratelli Travaglio of Marino Travaglio, from Bossolasco. It is the contribution of the new Oddero generation.
