The Story

Château Haut-Bages Libéral is a 5th Classified Growth in 1855. The vineyard spreads over 30 hectares and half of its area is located right next to Château Latour. The other part of the vineyard is on the plateau of Bages, South of Pauillac.

Pauillac is not a town rich in Classified Growths by chance. This exceptional terroir is a gift of nature. According to Claire Villars, no less than 90% of the work is done in the vineyard. The idea is to bring out the excellence of the terroir of Château Haut-Bages Liberal.

She has achieved the challenge of producing generous, elegant and powerful wines.

In her management of the vineyard, Claire Villars Lurton is directing her thoughts and practices towards sustainable and integrated vine growing. In 2010, an experiment in organic farming was conducted on some plots of merlot and in 2011, in biodynamic on cabernet sauvignon.

Vintage 2020

In Bordeaux, the heat led to early flowering. Additionally, this led to an early harvest after a very hot summer. As a starting point, there is great maturity in the grapes, and we can expect a more opulent vintage than in recent years.

This year's summer was the hottest since 1959, but the rain fell at just the right time during the growing season. The harvest took place two weeks before the norm and will produce grapes with high alcohol potential and the lowest acidity since the 2003 vintage. As they say in Bordeaux: “It was a good and extreme growing season which , hopefully, also produces great wines.”

Written Notes

Tasted in May 2021. 78% Cabernet Sauvignon + 22% Merlot. It was a very nicely made wine. Delicate, sappy, polished and with a smooth finish.

  • 91p

Dark purple colour with violet hue and black core. Expressive nose with juicy fruit, blackcurrant and elderberries, in the background hints of aromatic herbs, fresh basil and hints of subtle oak. On the palate powerful yet refined taste with firm yet mature tannins, blackcurrants and blackberries, ripe elderberries and mulberries, elegant spiciness and very fine toasting flavour, chalky minerality and freshness. A well structured, muscular wine with convincing length.
