A wet winter and mild spring gave way to an exceptionally dry summer from mid-May onwards. Hot weather prevailed until mid-August, when the skies opened again. Yes!! Nailed it! Finally, one of Benoit's wines was just as good as he himself has always claimed. As you know, I am extremely fond of the sesame oil-like perfume that Selosse has in his vineyard wines. I have often found similarities with that note in many growers who use equivalent methods, but it is only in this exciting vineyard wine from Ambonnay that the perfume has appeared in an identical way. Lovely! Of course, there is also a terroir-typical Ambonnay note that draws years of sensual red fruit with orange hints. It is only a certain oxidation bitterness in the aftertaste that lowers the score below the 95 mark. There is thus a certain risk that the wine will not age as well in the same way as with Léclapart, for example. That note could have been easily avoided with a few grams of oxidation-suppressing sugar.
