The Story

Masseto was born ‘almost by chance’ in 1986 when it was decided to vinify the Merlot from the Masseto vineyard alone as it ‘promised well’. This small, exceptional and legendary cru has soon become a collector’s item sold in auctions all over the world. The first vintage was called very simply ‘Merlot’ but, from 1987, it has taken on the name of its vineyard ‘Masseto’.

The Masseto vineyard is a unique place. Blessed with the generosity of a...

Wine Information

The inaugural commercial release and the first vintage to proudly bear the official Masseto front label. Born from an average, slightly delayed growing season with hot July temperatures, it yielded a delicate, fragrant, and profoundly elegant wine scoring 90–94 points ($1,500–$2,200+ per bottle)—showing silky tertiary notes of plum cake, cedarwood, dried flowers, and subtle resin that represent the earliest historical footprint of commercial I...

Vintage 1987

Italy Vintage report by Tb: 1987 was an agricultural campaign which produced average wines, rather short-lived. After a cold winter, a dry and raw spring slowly brought the vineyards to life. The entire summer and fall were fairly cool and dry, producing an average but quality harvest. In Tuscany, the flowering phase took place in magnificent weather until the rains at harvest time spoiled what was shaping up to be an excellent year. In Montal...

Written Notes

Here in its first commercial release, the 1987 Masseto is terrific. I am pleased and surprised to see the 1987 hanging on to so much depth, as it was decidedly more delicate when I last came across it. Dark plum, chocolate, licorice and spice are perhaps a bit strong for a wine of this age, but, then again, these were very early days for the estate. More than anything else, I am surprised by how well the 1987 continues to show.
