Firebird Gruner Veltliner 2022 ($30) – Gruner Veltliner has made its Australian home in the Adelaide Hills. The producers here have two different vintages available to allow comparison, always a fascinating thing to do. This is from a single vineyard and saw maturation in older French oak barrels, on lees.
The colour here is a daffodil yellow. On the nose, we have aromas of quinces and nectarines, lemon curd and a flick of citrus. The delightful textural aspect is a highlight. The wine is layered and mellow, with an underlying fine line of acidity. We see hints of green apples emerging on the finish, which lingers appealingly. Can be enjoyed any time over the next four to six years. 92.
