Albert Bichot transitions from organic vineyards to wines

The new organic wine statement will cover wines from Albert Bichot Côte d'Or estates - Domaine du Clos Frantin (7.3 ha) and Château-Gris (3.5 ha) in Nuits-Saint-Georges and Domaine du Pavillon (15 ha) in Pommard - and in Mercurey with Domaine Adélie (7.8 ha).

The vines on these properties have been certified as organically farmed since 2012, but the company wanted to take the initiative further following changes to European regulations. “The decision to make the statement was a signal customers were waiting for”, added the press release.

Future extensions

In addition to its own estates, Albert Bichot is also developing a range of organic wines from grape purchases in a dozen appellations, with partner winegrowers. Similarly, it has announced that it will “continue to extend its organic expertise” to the vines of Domaine Long-Depaquit in Chablis (65 ha) and Domaine de Rochegrès in Moulin-à-Vent (5.2 ha), which are already equipped and partially managed organically or using sustainable vineyard management techniques, depending on the plots.

Albert Bichot is a Beaune family-run company that has been managed since 1996 by Albéric Bichot; it owns 6 estates totalling 105 hectares of vines.

Historia

From 1350, the Bichot family was established in Burgundy, with a deer as a symbol. It is only in the XIXth century that the family gets into the wine business, when Bernard Bichot founds in 1831 a wine brokerage. The family heritage will be passed down from father to son until now. Since 1996, Albéric Bichot has represented the 6th generation to run the House.

Viiniviljelykset

Albert Bichot owns four estates set at the heart of four great viticultural regions that make up Burgundy: Chablis, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, and Côte Chalonnaise. Each estate consists of vineyards cultivated with sustainable practices, as well as facilities and teams devoted to the making and ageing of the region’s wines.

Under the direction of Alain Serveau, chief winemaker, our teams include vineyard managers who oversee viticulture and cellar masters who supervise vinification and ageing. Three wines represent the quintessence of our savoir-faire and our style.

Chablis - Château Long-Depaquit – 165 acres

Domaine Long-Depaquit was founded in 1791 and has built a reputation as one of the top estates in Chablis.

The harmonious lines of the Château itself date from the 18th Century. The outhouses are home to the fermentation tanks and underground cellars, while the Orangery is used as a reception area. Timeless moments can be spent sitting or walking in the calm surroundings of the rose garden and the park, with its hundred year old trees.

It is at Château Long-Depaquit, situated at the heart of the village of Chablis that the grapes from the estate’s 160 acres of vines are vinified.

The Grands Crus (10% of the total Grand Cru surface area of the appellation) and the 37 acres of Premiers Crus are grown according to environmentally friendly practices. Restricted yields and non-interventionist winemaking help to create authentic, mineral and elegant wines. Barrel ageing is used sparingly to best preserve the expression of each terroir.

Côte de Nuits - Domaine du Clos Frantin à Nuits-Saint-Georges – 32 acres

The Domaine du Clos Frantin covers 32 acres, including 20 acres of Premiers and Grands Crus. The respect of the soils, rigorous pruning and green harvesting when necessary helps to obtain the best quality fruits, also limiting yields.

In a historical building located at the entrance to Nuits-Saint-Georges, we vinify our estate wines and red wines made from purchased grapes, the majority of which come from the Côte de Nuits.

In our “cuverie” the use of gravity has replaced mechanical procedures in view of respecting the grapes quality and aromatic potential. The vaulted cellar which dates back to the Middle Ages houses 700 barrels at a constant temperature of 13°C with perfect humidity levels for optimal ageing conditions.

Côte de Beaune - Domaine du Pavillon à Pommard – 43 acres

Our Domaine in Pommard (3 kms south of Beaune) extends across 43 acres, including 20 acres of white wines. The estate is characterised by an environmentally friendly approach to growing, a respect for nature, and a limited production. The winemaking cellar is situated at the heart of a 10 acres property - Clos des Ursulines - at the edge of Pommard.

Ce sont les vins rouges de la Côte de Beaune qui sont vinifiés dans la cuverie du Domaine du Pavillon et élevés dans une cave centenaire aux parfaites proportions architecturales.

Red wines from the Côte de Beaune are vinified at the Domaine du Pavillon winery. They are then aged in a cellar one hundred years old that boasts perfect architectural proportions.

Côte Chalonnaise, Domaine Adélie à Mercurey – 10 acres

The most recent Albert Bichot estate, Domaine Adélie, is made up of 2 vineyards that produce delectable and generous red wines.

The estate was named after Albéric Bichot’s daughter who was born in 2003, thereby anchoring the presence of the Bichot family in Burgundy from generation to generation.
