Historia

Ama takes its name from the small borgo, or hamlet, nestled in the hills at almost 500 metres’ elevation. Five centuries past, it was the centre of local farming activities, as well as wine production carried out by a group of families of the area. “Da Radda the road led to Amma, three miles away, on a hill, where the Pianigiani, Ricucci, and Montigiani live, the most prominent families in Chianti. They are well-off country gentry that spend all their income on farming and vineyards, and do everything themselves. Surrounding the castello of Amma are the most beautiful hills and valleys in all of Chianti, beautifully tended, with fertile grain fields, olive groves, and magnificent vineyards,” wrote Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo of Habsburg-Lorraine in his 18th-century Report on the government of Tuscany.

His visit is commemorated by a plaque of that era affixed to one of the buildings in the borgo, which are now owned by the winery. Castello di Ama was established in the 1960s by a group of families from various places who fell under the spell of this spot and undertook the challenge of restoring the splendours of Ama’s past and of producing a Chianti Classico that would stand among the world’s most prestigious wines.

Viiniviljelykset

Castello di Ama possess a total of 89 hectares devoted to vineyard, subdivided into five magnificent shell-like hillslopes that local geography has always known by the traditional names of: Bellavista, San Lorenzo, Casuccia, Bertinga and Montebuoni. These vineyards surround the hamlet of Ama on all sides, radiating out some 3 kilometres, and are sited at elevations that range from 328 metres for Bertinga up to 525 for San Lorenzo (Al Poggio).

Vigneto Bellavista

The Bellavista vineyard, part of the original vineyard property purchased in 1972, lies geographically at the entrance to the property. Its 23.76 hectares of vines are planted in rocky, largely calcareous-clay soils aspected south-southwest at elevations of 515-427 metres. Since 1978, it has yielded the prestigious Chianti Classico selection “Vigneto Bellavista” and since1985 a small parcel facing the cellar has produced the progenitor of monovarietal Tuscan Merlots,“L’Apparita”

Vigneto La Casuccia

With most of the vineyard purchased in 1972 and another seven hectares in 1982, the La Casuccia vineyard lies some 2 kilometres from the borgo of Ama, in the direction of Radda. The soils are largely clay, with a good amount of pebble-gravel. Its 18.50 hectares face west-southwest at elevations of 483-527 metres. Since 1985, a rigorous quality-selection of grapes has made possible the prestigious Chianti Classico cru “Vigneto La Casuccia”.

Vigneto San Lorenzo

The lovely valley facing the two villas, Pianigiani and Ricucci, takes its name from the 15th-century church of San Lorenzo located in the centre of Ama. The San Lorenzo vineyard, purchased in 1972, comprises 19.17 hectares aspected east-southeast; it is planted in calcareous soils with a good amount of clay shale, at elevations of 461-525 metres. Between 1982 and 1990, it produced the Chianti Classico cru “Vigneto San Lorenzo”.

Vigneto Bertinga

The Bertinga vineyard, purchased in 1984, lies below the neighbouring borgo of Lecchi in Chianti, some2.5 kilometres from Ama, in the direction of Siena. Its 13.82 hectares of vines, at elevations of 394-328 metres, are largely west-facing, planted in medium-textured, fairly pebbly soils. In 1988 and 1990 it produced the prestigious Chianti Classico cru “Vigneto Bertinga”.

Vigneto Montebuoni

Located on the hillslope parallel to the Bellavista vineyard, the Montebuoni vineyard takes its name from the small village it faces. Purchased in 1997, it comprises 14.31 hectares and is aspected south-southwest at elevations of 420-508 metres. The soil composition varies widely, with clay-rich soils in the lower section and quite calcareous and rocky soils on the upper slopes.
