Charles Banks Sets Course for Mulderbosch's Future

Renowned winery Mulderbosch, of Stellenbosch in South Africa, announced today that it will begin importing its own wines into the United States.

“In order to recognize Mulderbosch’s full potential here in the United States, we wanted to better control how Mulderbosch goes to market, more effectively execute our sales strategy, and place added emphasis on Mulderbosch’s history, viticulture and enological potential, and rich lineage of old-vine Chenin Blancs,” said Charles Banks, managing partner of Terroir Capital, which owns the esteemed winery.

Banks continues, “We are very excited to re-introduce the Mulderbosch brand into the US through our sales team and distribution partners. I am extremely pleased with the wines that Adam Mason has crafted for Mulderbosch since joining us for the 2012 vintage, and I know they will showcase South Africa’s ability to produce some of the best wine values in the world.”

After twenty years together, Mulderbosch has ended its relationship with its US importer, Cape Classics, in favor of self-importing. “We greatly appreciate all that Cape Classics has done over the years for Mulderbosch and for the South African wine industry,” said Banks.

In addition to Chenin Blanc, Mulderbosch produces Sauvignon Blanc, Rosé of Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and the Faithful Hound, a Cabernet Sauvignon red blend.

In addition to Mulderbosch, Banks’ Terroir Capital also owns the following wineries: Sandhi and Leviathan from California, Fable from South Africa, and Maison L’Oree from Burgundy.

Historia

Since its founding in 1989, Mulderbosch Vineyards has widely been accepted as one of South Africa’s foremost wine producers. In 2011 Mulderbosch was bought by California-based investment company Terroir Capital with well known wine investor Charles Banks at the helm, who had long desired to invest in the Cape Winelands. Banks overhauled the winemaking and management teams, bringing in top winemaker Adam Mason who he had met several years earlier in the Napa Valley where Mason had worked a stint with highly regarded Napa winemaker Andy Erickson.

Taking Mulderbosch to the next level has seen significant improvements in both the vineyards and the cellar, with a strong focus on upgrading vineyard management practices and improvement of our grape sourcing program. As a valuable member of the greater Terroir Selections portfolio, Andy Erickson provides critical guidance with respect to our winemaking and blending decisions, visiting Mulderbosch during both harvest and  blending periods each year.

Although wine guide author John platter famously referred to the Mulderbosch Sauvignon Blanc as ”South Africa’s most celebrated Sauvignon”, Mulderbosch’s entire portfolio has consistently represented high quality wines of distinction for which it has gained an enviable track record. Offerings include our Faithful Hound Bordeaux-style blend, a varietal Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé, a Barrel fermented and lightly wooded style of Chardonnay, a Chenin Blanc sourced from predominantly old bush vines and a deliciously decadent Noble Late Harvest made from Sauvignon Blanc.

Viinivalmistus

Since the first vintage in 1992, Mulderbosch has endeavored to represent innovation, flair and excellence. This basic winemaking ethos prevails to this day, and whilst the range of wines we produce has increased, we are more committed than ever to create wines that proudly display the Mulderbosch seal of approval, yet continue to push the frontiers of winemaking and viticulture in order to satisfy our loyal supporters around the globe.

Heavily invested in agriculture as we are, Mulderbosch relishes the opportunity to preserve and improve all our vineyards and surrounding lands for the next generation. We see ourselves as custodians in this regard and as such are actively involved in land conservation and rehabilitation through initiatives such as the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative (BWI)which aims to conserve marginal habitats overlapping the Cape’s vineyard footprint.

Aside from this direct involvement in conservation, we observe a pragmatic approach to viticulture whereby each farming action is carefully weighed against its impact to the vine’s environment. Our belief in the importance of soil health has lead to intensive cover-cropping in order to preserve and increase topsoil condition, and the implementation of an intensive composting program whereby our entire grape production is composted and returned to the soils from whence they came.
