Historia

Traditional wines produced with modern methods: this is the philosophy of Villa Poggio Salvi. Wine is made in the vineyard but once it reaches the cellar it's very important to accompany it with knowledge, respecting the characteristics offered by each vintage.

Villa Poggio Salvi, because of its structure and modernity, is a winery that looks to the future respecting the past base on the simple elegance of Sangiovese Grosso refined in large capacity oak casks as per historical tradition. Villa Poggio Salvi owes its name to its fortunate location on the South side of Montalcino, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. Clean air and the perfumes coming from the dense oak forests and the Mediterranean that surround the company, attracted here people coming from Maremma since ancient times.

Poggio Salvi in fact stands for "Healthy Poggio", and has always been considered a salubrious and pure area, where people used to find shelter from diseases and viruses. Montalcino Historical Archives tell us that this place was famous for its wines, served to the most prestigious characters, already in the 16th Century.

Amazed by the beauty of the landscape, Eng. Pierluigi Tagliabue decided to purchase the company in 1979, and began the restructuring of the estate. Today, Villa Poggio Salvi counts 21 hectares of vineyards in Montalcino, all planted with clones of Sangiovese Grosso. The optimum altitude, between 300 and 500 meters, the soil rich of clay and the breeze coming from the Tyrrhenian Sea, maintain the soil and the climate perfect for vineyards.

Entering the world of wine means becoming intoxicate with a fascinating microcosm; in 1998, in fact, a new estate in the Chianti region, "Casavecchia", has been added to the company, to produce Chianti Colli Senesi, Tosco and Lavischio, our IGT wines based on Sangiovese and Merlot.

Villa Poggio Salvi structure and modernity is a company that looks to the future with passion and competence, under the wise direction of Pierluigi Tagliabue and his grandson Winemaker Luca Belingardi.

Our brand has always been represented by Pomona, she's our Goddess...

A woman's face with hair of grapes, Pomona is the fruits Roman Goddess (therefore called Patrona pomorum, the "Lady of the fruits"), also referring to the olive tree and vitis ones.

Her name comes after the Latin term pomum, "fruit". Ovidio describes her with a scythe in the right hand, and dedicates her a sacred forest called Pomonal, located south of the twelfth mile of Via Ostiense, close to Castel Porziano in Rome. According to the poet Ausonius, Pomona protects the month of September because that's when fruits ripe.

The Italian Pomona, by Giorgio Gallesio (Finalborgo, 1772 - Firenze, 1839), is also the first and most important collection of images and descriptions of fruits and fruit trees ever made in Italy. The opus, made by bruchures published between 1817 and 1839, exists today in very few exemplars.

Pomona is then the face that appears on every labels of ours since 1979 until today.

Our actual labels are the result of a recent restyiling process, entrusted to Robilant Studios in Milan, an important design company that represents the "Made in Italy" concept all around the World.

Asking Maurizio from Robilant to take care of our restyle has been a real return to our roots; he's the same person who first pictured the Pomona's face on our first labels in 1979.

Pomona is always present in many different occasions, and our company offers her on various objects, as a good omen to the watching over the harvest and the winery.

Viinivalmistus

A wide and modern wine cellar lies under the villa, perfectly integrated with the surrounding environment. The initial project came from a sketch drawn in 1990 by architect Enric Miralles, Ing. Tagliabue's brother-in-law.

Since 1979 there have been many different expansions; the current structure has been realized thanks to the genius of Benedetta Tagliabue, Pierluigi Tagliabue's daughter, who worked with her EMBT studio (Enric Miralles Benedetta Tagliabue) with the same passion instilled in other important projects such as the Scottish Parliament and the Spanish Expo pavilion.

The wine cellar is perfectly inserted into the territory physiognomy, it stands naturally, following the ground curves and entering in unison with it. it is the pulsing heart of the company, where tradition and innovation perfectly blend together. Inside its wide spaces nothing is left to chance, everything has its important role, from the fermentation to the bottling, through the refining and storage room.
