The Story

Three grape varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and a touch of Syrah, produce a rosé with decisive and intense aromas that reflect the characteristics of Bolgheri’s territory. The wine and vineyard take their name from a bandit named Scalabrone who roamed this area in the 18th century. Vineyards thrive on clay-loam based soils, mainly of alluvial origin, with rocky deposits.

Appellation: Bolgheri DOC Rosato

Blend: Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon

Estate: The Guado al Tasso estate is located in the small but prestigious Bolgheri DOC, on the coast of upper Maremma, about one hundred kilometers southwest from Florence. This appellation has a relatively recent history, DOC Bolgheri was approved in 1995 and since then it has become an internationally recognized reference point for the Italian and international winemaking arena. The estate covers an area of 320 hectares (790 acres) planted with vines, set in a beautiful plain encircled by rolling hillsides known as the "Bolgheri Amphitheatre" due to its particular shape. The vineyards are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Vermentino. The nearby sea provides a mild climate with constant breezes that mitigate summer heat and alleviate harsh winter weather, maintaining a clear sky and a high level of sunlight exposure.

Wine Information

The 2018 season was for the most part rainy, particularly during winter and spring. These climatic conditions abundantly replenished groundwater reserves in the soil that were drastically depleted after 2017’s drought conditions. Bud break occurred a week later than average. During the growth period, with higher than average temperatures and frequent rain showers, the vineyards required timely maintenance and management to guarantee normal development of the vines. Summer trends were regular, with hot dry days that provided optimal conditions for slow, constant ripening of the grapes. Harvesting of Scalabrone’s grapes began with Merlot on August 22nd and continued with Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon coming to a close on September 6th.

Written Notes

This intense and firm fresh rosé is made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and touch of Syrah varieties. Thanks to these intense coloured grapes the wine has moderately deep and intense rosé colour. The nose shows mix of black and red fruit aromas combined with spicy floral notes. Dry and fresh palate is highlighted with crisp acidity and fresh blackcurrant and raspberry notes. Vivid acidity, refined tannins and concentrated fruitiness gives wine its solid structure. The finish is lingering with fresh raspberry flavours. Drink now at 10-12°C with chicken ragout, grilled sweetbreads or pulled pork. JL 88p (12/2020)
