The Story
Loibenberg is one of the ”Grand Crus” of Austria. The ancient dry stone walls (some are dating back to the 14th century) reach up to 420m above sea level. The soil is dominated by weathered primary-rock, the so called ”Gföhler Gneiss”, with layers of loess and loam. Warm pannonian airstreams make Loibenberg the ”hotplate” of the Wachau. Stretching out over more than 20 hectares, Loibenberg is one of the Wachau’s biggest single vineyards and is famous for its diversified microclimate.
Loibenberg is one of the steepest and most austere primitive-rock sites encountered in Loiben. It is one of Wachau's largest coherent single vineyards, is fully exposed to the south and accordingly warm and sunny. The wines derived from this site are shaped by the unique composition of this first-class primitive-rock soil, which imparts longevity to them. Here, opulent, intense and yet subtle wines develop – Riesling showing a fruity texture (peach, apricot) and Grüner Veltliner being full-bodied with underlying minerality, even slightly smoky and tobacco notes.
