The Story
In the 1960s Remigio Bordini discovered a unique clone growing in Veneto, a vine clearly from the Cabernet family that also betrayed distinctive Merlot traits. Wolf and Bettina Rogosky were looking for something special to grow on their tiny 2.5ha Tuscan estate 420 meters above sea level, and this Cabernet Franc / Merlot mutation, known as Caberlot, was the perfect fit. The first plantings were made in 1985 and the first wine was made in 1988, but barely a decade later Wolf sadly died. However, his wife Bettina, their son Moritz and winemaker Peter Schilling have since ensured great success for the estate, earning Il Carnasciale a cult following.

lL Caberlot - Podere Il Carnasciale
In the early 1970' a German couple, Wolf and Bettina Rogosky, bought a property in Tuscany. The estate lies atop a rocky, south-facing bluff that towers above Tuscany’s Arno river. “It was always Wolf's dream to have a place there,” says Bettina. “Tuscany was the place for beauty, and at that time property was plentiful and inexpensive.” In 1986 they were given permission by the local government to begin planting grapes on their property Il Carnasciale, and under Wolf’s guidance they assembled an impressive winemaking team including enologist Vittorio Fiori and agronomist Remigio Bordini who supplied his mysterious and jealously guarded Caberlot grape variety. Il Caberlot, and its second label Carnasciale, are the only wines in the world made from this mysterious clone discovered four decades ago near Verona. Named “Caberlot,” the grape has characteristics of both Cabernet and Merlot—hence its name. Caberlot’s discoverer Bordini has allowe! d the vine to be planted on just one place outside his nursery: at Wolf and Bettina's estate, Il Carnasciale.
Their first wine was released in 1988, and after that Il Caberlot rapidly collected admirers and awards. In 1994, Wolf suddenly passed away. Bettina continues the work on the estate with her two sons Philip and Morritz, and enologist Peter Schilling, who joined the crew in 2002.
Il Caberlot is bottled exclusively in magnum bottles.
