Grapes: Nebbiolo 100%
Origin & Soil: From the Bussia vineyards in Monforte. Height 350 m. South exposed.
Origins go back to the Tortonian era. Calcareous compact clay alternated with sandy layers.
Taste: Intense garne colour with ruby reflexes. On the nose, intense perfume of plum and ripe cherry with hints of flowers and spicy aromas. On the palate, intense with soft tannins and a long final taste. Due to its structure and body, it is a perfect match for meat and game dishes, and cheeses. Ideal serving temperature 17°C.
Climate Vintage: The hot and dry Spring allowed the vines to bud a month earlier than usual. During flowering the weather was mild with no rainfalls. Summer was very hot and dry. The grapes matured earlier than average, reaching a very high level of sugar and aromatic concentration, typical of the very best vintages. The harvest started on October 12 and finished on October 15.
Vintage: The selected grapes were destemmed and pressed. Maceration lasted 12 days at a maximum temperature of 30°C in Austrian 53Hl vats. Malolactic fermentation was carried out before the end of the winter.
Ageing took place in 50 Hl French oak barrels and a small quantity in second time used Barriques. A further 12 months of bottle ageing followed in the Prunotto cellars before shipping.

Italian Vintage Report by Tb: In 1997, the entire Italian wine industry was rejuvenated by one of the greatest vintages of all time. The only negative aspect of the year was subzero night temperatures in April and May, which damaged exceptionally early buds and flowers. As a result, crop yield was lower than desired. Otherwise, the summer season was blessed with sunny and warm weather. Temperatures soared in August and September and the grapes ripened two weeks earlier than normal. This took Piedmont by surprise, as Nebbiolo ripened before Barbera, which was unprecedented. The small grapes were so well balanced that there were only four other Italian vintages like 1997 in the 20th century. Otherwise, the acidity of the grapes has fallen below normal levels due to their ripeness. In Tuscany the situation was the same as in Piedmont – there had not been a harvest of such quality since 1947. The wines can still take years of aging and up to decades for Barolos and Barbarescos .
