History

For nearly 20 years, Banrock Station wines have brought the pleasure of fine Australian wine and the message of conservation to the world. Vineyards

The vineyard has been developed from 13 hectares in 1994 to 239 hectares consisting of 17 varieties, including the Mediterranean grapes Montepulciano, Tinta Cao, Touriga and Tinta Mole.

The vineyard is managed using best-practice techniques. Irrigation is used only as necessary, indicated by moisture probes in the soil. Gradual conversion to sub-surface irrigation and vineyard-wide mulching both reduce the amount of supplementary watering required.

In 2002 the Banrock Station vineyard achieved the international environmental management system accreditation, ISO 14001.

Winemaking

Our winemaking philosophy is to create flavoursome, generous, value for money Australian wines, while demonstrating respect for the good earth from which they come.
Part of this balance is the introduction of varieties that grow more sustainably in the South Australian climate. Mediterranean varieties are proving great water-savers as well as producing a wonderful variety of flavours for today’s adventurous palates.

Inside information

Since 2004 Paul Burnett has been making wine in the Riverland, South Australia. Paul is passionate about the Riverland region, a hub of industry-leading viticulture and winemaking research and innovation. Paul is a South Australian local, completing his Bachelor of Agricultural Science (Oenology) at the University of Adelaide. He has travelled throughout the Californian wine regions, a highlight of which was a stint with Blackstone winery, specialising in small scale premium winemaking. While working vineyards in Castelfiorentino, Tuscany, Paul fell in love with flavoursome Italian red varietals such as Montepulciano and Sangiovese.
