Bodegas Beronia Opens New Winery In Rueda

Leading Rioja wine brand Beronia has announced the opening of its new winery in Rueda. Inaugurated during the 2017 harvest, the winery’s opening is part of the company’s strategic investment in the brand and quality white winemaking in the DO Rueda.

Award winning Rioja wine brand Beronia is continuing its strategic investment in the strengthening of the brand and the quality of its wines with the opening of a brand new winery in the heart of the DO Rueda, Spain.

Equipped with the latest technology and state-of-the-art facilities, the Beronia Rueda winery is situated close to the two vineyard estates Finca La Perdiz and Finca El Torrejón, where the Verdejo grapes are cultivated for Beronia Rueda. The two estates make up 65 hectares of owned vineyard, both with distinctive characteristics designed to enhance the unique Beronia style.

Beronia Winemaker, Marian Santamaría joined the Beronia winemaking team earlier this year and is delighted to be part of this new and exciting project. She comments: “The first vintage has been full of challenges, working with new equipment and in a new environment, however, the end result has been wonderful. The 2017 Verdejo from Beronia Rueda will be a delicious wine. Benefitting from our dual harvesting system, where the first triage in the vineyard yields fresh crisp wines with linear acidity, and the second gives rich ripeness which enhances the middle palate of the wine. Having our own winery this year will mean that the quality of Beronia Rueda will only improve.”

The new winery is part of Beronia’s current strategic plan to invest in the brand’s portfolio across the board by ensuring the production of the best possible quality wines made with the strictest and most up-to-date sustainable farming techniques.

History

In the 3rd century BC the Rioja region was inhabited by the Berones, a warrior people of Celtic origin whose settlements extended from the Sierra de Cantabria in the north to the Sierra de la Demanda to the south.  This warrior people, who also grew crops, raised cattle, made pottery and metalwork, called their land Beronia.

In 1973 a group of businessmen and friends of a Gastronomic Society founded Bodegas Beronia, named in tribute to the primitive inhabitants of this beautiful land.   A passion for fine food and high quality wines was the starting point for the famous aged red wines that the bodega produces.

After the last harvest it was estimated that 6 million kilos of grapes were brought.  The grapes are selected by Matías Calleja, the winery's technical director, from the 850 hectares of vineyard located less than 10 kilometres from the winery, in the purest château style.  All the vineyards are specially selected and the grape varieties used are the indigenous ones authorised by the DOCa Rioja – Tempranillo (90%), Graciano (3%) Mazuelo (3%) and Viura (4%).

Bodegas Beronia is committed to producing quality wine that expresses the character of the terroir – a philosophy based on respect for the environment and its ability to adapt to the new market trends whilst retaining the essence of Rioja.

Winemaking

Faithful to its tradition Beronia produces a classic line of fine, balanced Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva wines as well as a young white wine made from Viura  grapes and a rosé made from 100% Tempranillo.

Equally, Beronia's love of innovation has led it to create several wines in the modern style, the Beronia Varietal Collection: an unusual Barrel Fermented White Viura, Beronia Special Production Tempranillo, Graciano and Beronia Mazuelo Reserva, and is the only winery in Rioja that makes the latter as a Reserva.

These are unique, exclusive wines inspired by the Beronia spirit and that are produced in limited editions.
Significantly, Bodegas Beronia is committed to ongoing investment in R+D, which has enabled it to develop organic wine-growing.
95% of Beronia wines are red and are aged in new, medium-toasted American oak barrels. A select number of new barrels are made from a combination of woods, with French oak ends and American oak staves, to lend the wine greater complexity.

The red wines age in 28,500 barrels in underground cellars, which provide the ideal temperature and level of humidity and are racked every four months.  One important factor as regards the quality of the wine is the average age of the barrels, which at Beronia is just four and a half years.

With bottle racks that can store 2,000,000 bottles.
With a clear objective for the future, the winery is committed to sustained growth based on quality.  In 1999 it obtained ISO 9002/94 International Quality Certification and was one of the first wine producing companies to do so.

In the year 2000 Beronia's environmental management system was awarded ISO 14001/96 certification and the winery was one of the first to obtain this international accreditation.
