History

In 1874, Bodegas Montecillo was founded by Celestino Navajas in La Rioja Alta. It is therefore one of the longest established wineries in the Rioja and with the greatest tradition in the making of wines protected by this Denominacion de Origen.

More than 130 years after it was founded, Bodegas Montecillo strictly adheres to its prime objective: to produce natural and full red wines with personality by carefully selecting the raw material, the grape, and by allowing its wines to naturally age and mature in their bottles. This results in a highly consistent level of quality year after year.

Bodegas Montecillo only makes top-of-the-range wines, all of which receive the seal of guarantee from the Consejo Regulador de la Denominacion de Origen Calificada Rioja (Rioja DOC Control Board): Montecillo Crianza, Montecillo Reserva, Montecillo Gran Reserva, and Montecillo Gran Reserva Seleccion Especial.

Montecillo Crianza: Remains over one year in casks and is later refined in bottles. Varietal: Tempranillo.

Montecillo Reserva: Crianza, aged over 3 years, 18 months in casks and is later refined in bottles. Varietal: Tempranillo.

Montecillo Gran Reserva: Crianza, over 24 months in casks and 36 months refined in bottles. Varietal: Tempranillo.

Cumbre Montecillo: The best-harvested grapes, aged in Allier casks for 32 months and refined in bottles. Qualification from the Regulatory Council of La Rioja 2006: Very good.
