History

Buena Vista Winery has a rich, delicious heritage as the first premium-and certainly the most colorful-of all of the wineries in California. And its founder, the self-proclaimed “Count of Buena Vista,” Agoston Haraszthy, was a vivacious and eccentric pioneer with a veritable love and unending commitment to California wine.

Surrounded by his own tales of intrigue and political exile, The Count immigrated from Europe in 1840 in pursuit of opportunity and freedom in the burgeoning American West. Following the forty-niners in search of gold in the hills of Northern California, Haraszthy sought “purple gold” – the perfect ‘terroir’ for exceptional wine. He ultimately settled in Sonoma, birthplace of California and capital of the short-lived California Republic, where he founded Buena Vista Winery in 1857.

A committed farmer, an experimental innovator and vintner, a respected author, a shrewd businessman and a brilliant and incredibly zealous promoter, The Count is considered California’s most acclaimed and flamboyant vinicultural pioneer and evangelist.

Despite his abrupt death in 1869 in an alligator-infested river in the jungles of Nicaragua and following the challenges of the depression, prohibition, and phylloxera infestation; his beloved Buena Vista Winery has not only endured but also prospered. Boisset Family Estates, a family with a true love and respect for Buena Vista, is passionately committed to continue the imaginative vision and unrivaled legacy first created by The Count 150 years ago. Please join us in celebrating the rebirth of Buena Vista. Our brilliant history, our spectacular wines and the extraordinary experience at our breathtaking estate.

Vineyards

Carneros is one of the handful of regions in California able to bring such grapes as Chardonnay and the finicky Pinot Noir to proper maturity. Its position at the top of San Pablo Bay makes Carneros – along with the Russian River Valley, coastal Sonoma and the Central Coast – a prime area for the production of wines with graceful elegance and specific regional character.

Winemaking

While the Carneros climate provides an amazing array of flavors and textures, it is in the winery that this palette of flavors is truly expressed. We are fortunate that our vineyards are in the heart of one of the most celebrated appellations in the world. Each and every step of our winemaking process is designed to articulate the exceptional character of Carneros fruit.

Crafting Carneros Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is an alluring challenge for winemakers. Capable of producing plush, spicy, complex wines, it is also extremely finicky in the vineyard. We work with up to 25 different clones of Pinot Noir, each offering a subtly different expression of the varietal. Capturing the rich, complex flavors of Carneros fruit in our red wine is an exercise in subtleties; a delicate task that is as much about what we don’t do as what we do.

Crafting Carneros Chardonnay

Carneros Chardonnays are famous for lively citrus, green apple and tropical (pineapple) flavors. The long, cool growing season in Carneros gives Chardonnay fruit tremendously long “hang time” on the vine. Cooler temperatures also allow the fruit to retain a firm acid structure while developing varietal character. White wines obtain their framework from acidity while red wines obtain theirs from a combination of tannins and acid. But wines such as this are not forced into existence. Rather, they are coaxed along gently, using just the right amount of winemaking technique to allow the unique flavors to express themselves.

Inside information

Before there were vineyards in every valley north of San Francisco, before Napa and Sonoma were household names, before there was a California wine world at all, there was Buena Vista.  Founded in 1857, Buena Vista is California’s first premium winery, and its history is as colorful as it is proud. Today, the legend is being re-born under the vision of Jean-Charles Boisset. Just outside the town of Sonoma, the original winery is now a California Historic Landmark, and home to our Winery, Tasting Room, and Visitor’s Center.

Buena Vista. Our future is our past… our vivacious, colorful, and pioneering past!
