History

The estate was founded by Alfo Bartolommei in 1965.

The Bartolommei family settled in the Municipality of Montalcino at the beginning of the last century.  The family originated from Podere Marzolo in the Municipality of Cinigiano (Province of Grosseto).

In 1911, the family moved to Podere Poggi, a tenant farm on the Villa Santa Restituta estate working the land by sharecropping (a typical form of Tuscan farm management).  In the years that followed, the family moved several times from one country home to another on the Villa Santa Restituta estate until they finally arrived at the Caprili farm home in 1952.  The family took over Caprili with all their livestock and continued to work the land by sharecropping.  In 1965, the Bartolommei family decided to buy the property from the Castelli-Martinozzi family, owners of Villa Santa Restituta estate.  In the same year, 1965, they planted the first vineyard, still called “Madre” to this day, where the clones for the new vineyards planted on the estate are selected.

The first bottle of Brunello di Montalcino is from the 1978 harvest and was put on the market in 1983.

Vineyards

The Caprili estate spreads out over an area of 58 hectares in the southwest territory of the Municipality of Montalcino on the hillside which slopes down towards the Orcia and Ombrone rivers.

Of the total property, 18 hectares of the land is covered with vines. Sangiovese Grosso is cultivated on a total of 16 ha for Brunello di Montalcino D.O.C.G. and Rosso di Montalcino D.O.C.G.  Trebbiano, Malvasia and Vermentino varieties are planted on 1,3 hectares of land for the white Settimia, while Moscadello is grown on the remaining 0.7 hectares in order to produce wine of the same name, Moscadello di Montalcino D.O.C.

The estate also has four hectares of olive groves for its excellent extra-virgin olive oil classified with the marque “Denominazione di Origine Protetta Terre di Siena” – Protected Denomination of Origin for oil produced in the area of Siena.

Winemaking

Only grapes cultivated from Caprili’s own vineyards are used in its wines.  The vines are trained with a spurred cordon system and sit at altitudes that range from 225 to 340 metres above sea level.  This location, southwest of the winery facing the sea, enjoys the mitigating action of the winds that prevents humid stagnation which can possibly cause fungal attacks on the vines.  Consequently, the only treatments used are copper or sulphur based.

The vinification follows its natural process avoiding the addition of yeasts or other exogenous correctors.  The use of natural yeasts, found in the grapes themselves, is favoured, giving the wine its own precise territorial identity that is easily recognizable and traceable.  But at the same time, its identity is never confirmed on the palate or in fragrance, instead it supports the mutability in the seasonal course of the vintage and expresses its own uniqueness.
