History

Since 1893 the Cecchi family & brand has been synonymous with viticulture, both in Italy and throughout the world. The history of the winery is a compelling story of a family, articulated by passion, dedication to the land and a brilliant entrepreneurial spirit. Using the strength gained from their experience of more than 100 years of love for the land, today the Cecchi family takes on the challenges of the future with that same enthusiasm.

The desire to go off the beaten path, falling in love at first sight with an unknown land, seeing oneself in a place and reliving those same emotions felt years before: all of this persuaded the Cecchi family, for the first time in its history, to go beyond the Tuscan borders to take on a new adventure. At the end of the 1990s, the winery invested in the Sagrantino di Montefalco territory, a prestigious Umbrian designation that has received great fame in the last 20 years in Italian oenology.

The purchase of Tenuta Alzatura was, besides a financial endeavour for the Cecchi family, a needed reorganization of production strategy, both agricultural and oenological, that had to adapt to a new reality. However, the winery recognized the bond between the Sagrantino vineyards and the elected territory as the same expressive distinctiveness and social/cultural grounding of local winemaking; factors which base the quality achieved in Tuscan wineries.

The Cecchi family purchased Villa Cerna in the early 1960s. Here, apart from its historical value, Luigi recognized a great vocation for quality viticulture. Restoration of the Villa took place after the construction of the cellar for winemaking and wine aging at the foot of the hill.

The connection between the Cecchi family and San Gimignano dates back to the end of World War II. In fact, it was during this period that the family found refuge in the hills of this enchanting Tuscan town. Their intuition said this would be a highly suited territory for quality winemaking – which convinced the Cecchi family to undertake the venture of producing Vernaccia di San Gimignano.

The profound experience acquired in Chianti Classico and the passion for Sangiovese pushed the Cecchi family to another winemaking challenge that moved the production center towards the Tuscan coast: to Maremma to be exact. In 1996, the Cecchi family purchased the Val delle Rose winery in the small town of Poggio la Mozza, which is in the heart of the production area of Morellino di Scansano. At the time of purchase, Val delle Rose had its vineyards roughly planted on 25 hectares.

The desire to go off the beaten path, falling in love at first sight with an unknown land, seeing oneself in a place and reliving those same emotions felt years before: all of this persuaded the Cecchi family, for the first time in its history, to go beyond the Tuscan borders to take on a new adventure.
