History

Since the first vintage of Charles Melton Wines in 1984, this small Barossa Valley winery has gained both national and international recognition for its fine red table wines.

The wines move from a light red, ‘The Rose of Virginia’ through to Australia’s premier Rhone-style red, ‘Nine Popes’. Charlie Melton also makes small quantities of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sparkling Shiraz, and is the only Australian producer of a vin-santo styled dessert wine, Sotto di Ferro.

Charlie was one of the first to recognize the value and tradition of the Barossa’s old vineyard Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvedre. At a time when others were pulling out vineyards of Shiraz to plant more fashionable varieties, Charlie was convincing farmers to keep their historic vineyards. He was one of a small group of winemakers who helped retain the viticultural heritage of the Barossa.

Vineyards

The grapes for our wines are drawn from some of the oldest and most venerable vines in the Barossa.

These gnarled old veterans, dry grown on a mix of estate vineyard and family owned blocks, reflect the unique style and traditions that produce the famed Barossa Valley red wine style.

Careful chemical-free husbandry delivers to the winery fruit of the purest flavours for our wine making team to mold into fine wines that truly reflect our Barossa earth.

THE KIRCHE VINEYARD, KRONDORF

Relatively youthful at 40 years old, this vineyard produces some of the highest quality Cabernet grown in the Barossa, along with superb Shiraz. Most of the vineyard sits on loam and red clay, with the edge on the eastern side heading into the seam of black cracking clay (Bay of Biscay). So named because it surrounds the Zum Kripplen Christi Lutheran Church ("Kirche" in German), built in 1864. 30 acres planted.

WINERY BLOCK, KRONDORF

Gnarled old bush vine Grenache planted in 1942 during the WWII, growing in a strip of Bay of Biscay black cracking clay that runs from Bethany Village through to the end in Krondorf Village. A little patch of Shiraz completes this dry grown block of outstanding quality and provides a historical and beautiful outlook for our Cellar Door visitors. Five acres planted.

WOODLAND VINEYARD, ALTONA

A superb 25 acre, dry grown vineyard of almost 50 years age, growing Shiraz and Grenache principally, with a small Cabernet plot. These different soil types comprise the earth here, dark loam, shallow red load over limestone and a small patch of gravel soil in which the Cabernet has its roots.

KOCH VINEYARD, ROWLAND FLAT

The vines on our block were planted in 1927 by Bernhard Adolph Koch, the great grandson of Friedrich Wilhelm Koch. The vineyard were planted by some of the unemployed Afghan cameleers and was the talk of the district for the unerring accuracy of the spacings and precision of the vine rows, still evident today. Split almost equally between bushvine Grenache and Shiraz, growing in friable gradational clay loam. 20 acres planted.

HIGH EDEN, EDEN VALLEY

Charlie and Virginia purchased 73 acres of beautifully slopping land in the high Eden Valley in 2008.

The land was planted in 2010 with Shiraz and of course bushvine Grenache. There will also be a small field planting of some of the 13 varieties which make up the traditional Chateauneuf du Pape blend.

Winemaking

A range of techniques are employed during the winemaking process. These include: whole bunch fermentation, open fermentation, pigeage and indigenous yeast fermentation. All of which allows a range of blending options to give the most complete wine in terms of balance between pure fruit flavours and more earthy/gamey characters.

The dry reds are matured in both French and American Oak. This gives rise to a cellar style which has a kiss of superb oak character rather than a thump, and allows the rich fragrance and flavours of old dry grown Barossa vines to move to the fore.

Showing complexity from this range of vineyard sites and vinification techniques, the wines have demonstrated over the last decade an ability to cellar gracefully into mature examples of the finest Barossa styles.

Inside information

Charles Melton has specialised in the production of limited release, premium red wines made from Barossa grapes since 1984. This small Barossa Valley winery located on the famous Krondorf Road, has since gained worldwide recognition for its premium red table wines. The wine portfolio now ranges from an iconic full bodied Rosé, the ‘Rose of Virginia’, to premium single vineyard Shiraz and Cabernet wines, through to Australia’s premier Rhone-style blend, the ‘Nine Popes’ GSM.

Great emphasis is placed on fruit quality, with all grapes dry grown and harvested from the winery’s own 80 acres of prime Barossa vineyards, as well as from a select group of grape growers. Yields are extremely low (often only one tonne per acre) from old vines that can exceed 80 years in age.

These wines exhibit richness and finesse that are the hallmarks of the Barossa's finest wines. Enduring commitment to vineyard and winemaking practices wine will ensure this continues well into the future.

Awarded the Barossa's 'Best Small Cellar Door' in 2016 by Gourmet Traveller Wine magazine, Charles Melton Wines offers guests a unique and memorable wine tasting and dining experience.
