History

It all started in 1925 when the grandfather of Valérie Bugada-Jean expressed an interest in the terroir of the smallest village in the Médoc. He purchased his first plots of land in Couquèques and soon discovered their outstanding potential. This lover of vines and wine passed on his expertise to his sons, Christian and Claude, who, many years later, also handed on this knowledge to his son-in-law, Eric Bugada.

2015 marked the beginning of a new chapter when Eric’s wife, Valérie, left her career in tourism and communication to work at the estate. Their combined energies are shaping the destiny of Château Beauvillage.

Three generations of dedicated winegrowers have helped create fine-tuned wines, which have earned a place in the Médoc Crus Bourgeois classification. Joining the family of Médoc Crus Bourgeois requires adhering to stringent quality control standards, approved by the French authorities since 2009. The estate obtained this recognition in 2015, thus guaranteeing that our high-quality wines meet a set of demanding specifications, as well as being approved by a panel of experts in a blind tasting.

Vineyards

The Château Beauvillage terroir consists of a combination of clay-limestone and gravel. The fossilised stones and heavy, clay soil produce full-bodied, elegant wines. Benefiting from the close proximity of the Gironde Estuary on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other, this 24-hectare estate has vineyards in three villages – Couquèques, Saint-Christoly de Médoc and Civrac – offering a range of conditions conducive to a long harvest, ideal for picking Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes at peak ripeness. Ever since the vineyard was created in 1925, the choice of cultivating Merlot grapes seemed only natural. Perfectly suited to the estate’s terroir, Merlot represents 55% of the blend, resulting in smooth, round wines with red and black fruit aromas (raspberry and redcurrants), developing with age to reveal hints of prunes, violets, forest floor, and spices. Cabernet Sauvignon, another traditional grape variety of the Médoc appellation, complements the blend. The combination of these two grape varieties account for the colour, structure, and lovely black fruit aromas of our wines, as well as their outstanding ageing potential.
