History

Château Marjosse is a small Bordeaux property that is fast gaining a reputation as one of the region's bets value wines. It was bought in 1997 by the régisseur of Château Cheval Blanc, Pierre Lurton, a prominent member of the Bordeaux wine dynasty of the same name. In just 3 years he has earned the wines of Marjosse considerable, and much deserved, recognition.

Marjosse is located near the village of Tizac-de-Curton in the heart of the Entre-Deux-Mers region. Its consists of 9 hectares of vineyards, exceptionally well-sited on a clay and limestone plateau around 300 metres above seal level and planted with Merlot (60%), Cabernet Sauvignon (20%), Cabernet Franc (10%) and Malbec (10%). Pierre Lurton makes the wine in simply-equipped but marvellously functional, two hundred-year old cellars. It is still early days but the future looks very bright for Château Marjosse.

Great wine weekend with friends from the wine world, gathering in Dordogne basically each of us bringing along a few bottles to smash and to wash our palate with from all the amazing local food and meat !

 Julia Harding MW, Wine Writer (United Kingdom)  tasted  2 wines  from  Château Marjosse . In a tasting of  25 wines 

Château Margaux Pavillon Blanc 2018 / Harvest started 27 August, as in 2017. ‘It’s as if this came from another vintage’, says winemaker Phillipe Bascaules, because the drought of September missed them because of the harvest date and they missed the hydric stress that the reds faced, so they were able to keep the freshness. Easier to explain the freshness of the whites than that of the reds, he suggested. pH 3.1. Barrel sample. 
Subtle oak spice and mealy, creamy notes from the barrels but also beautifully fragrant citrus and blossom on the nose, making the palate all the more remarkable in its incredible fruit intensity. Amazing intensity and freshness at the same time. Concentration but with this salty aftertaste. Mouth-watering. Succulent and so full of pure, fragrant citrus, almost a touch of apricot. Really aromatic on the palate too. Both sweet-fruited and salty giving very good balance. Mealy, almost savoury on the final salty finish. (JH)

“2015 will be one of the excellent vintages however hardly to compare to 2009 and 2010 or 2005. In 2015 the region played a major role, terroir was the key to success. For red wines, the limestone plateau in Saint-Emilion performed extremely well as there was water available during the hot summer days and drainage proved to be ideal during rainy August. Therefore the best wines of Saint-Emilion come from limestone soils. The sandy parts of the appellation produced a quite heterogeneous result. In Pomerol it looked the same with very successful wines from the central plateau and more heterogeneous qualities from the areas around. In Fronsac it was not only the terroir which proved important, the vintners decision had a major impact. Pessac-Léognan did extremely well in this vintage with a homogenous quality. The Médoc was divided. The southern part, mainly Margaux and the southern part of Saint-Julien have seen less rain and produced more powerful wines. The northern part of the Médoc, especially Pauillac and Saint-Estèphe have produced a very fine and elegant style with excellent persistence. On the good terroirs, the seeds were ripe which results in very ripe tannins with a silky or velvety expression. In addition the cooler conditions of autumn provoked a very pure and fresh fruit. For the dry white wines the quality depends very much on the origin again. Due to the hot and dry growing season, a lot of white wines show very mild, almost soft acidity but also some phenolic hints in the aftertaste. A few dry white wines are standing out, having preserved freshness and acidity. The sweet wines are remarkably good, very rich in character and the best of them have a crisp acidity balancing the opulent sugar. The tasting conditions were rather good, however the weather was quite mixed affecting the presentation of the wines. The wines were tasted blind where possible and open. The final decision on the rating is based on both tasting types.”
