History

When the Roederer group bought the estate in 2003 they saw an immense potential in this unique terroir managed for generations by the Réaut family. Aiming to create an exceptional Bordeaux, they completely remodelled and replanted the 26 hectares of the property following the standards of the region’s Grands Crus Classés. In 2009 the Champagne-based group redefined its business strategy and decided to sell the estate. Led by Yannick Evenou, who was running Château la Dominique at the time, a group of friends and wine enthusiasts purchased the winery.

Château Réaut became the first-ever wine estate to be jointly owned by 6 partners from Bordeaux and 6 from Burgundy. This cultural mix and the outstanding work done in the vineyards make Château Réaut stand out among other properties. Its uniqueness also shows in its coat of arms, which associates the symbols of Bordeaux and Burgundy.

Vineyards

Stretching for 26 hectares on a hillside overlooking the river Garonne, Château Réaut is located near the city of Rions, only 4 km from Cadillac. Nestled on the right bank of the river, south-east of Bordeaux, this estate provides a particularly favourable setting to grow exceptional grapes.

With vines dating back to Roman times, this area plays an important part in Bordeaux’s long tradition of wine production. Château Réaut’s vineyard is comprised of 18 ha of south-facing hillside, as well as 8 ha of flat gravelly soil. Château Réaut’s vineyard sits on a gently rolling south-facing hill (about 18 ha) and extends onto a rich gravelly plateau of 8 ha. The area benefits from Bordeaux’s typical oceanic climate and a very favourable micro-climate with early warm days and abundant sunlight.

Winemaking

Château Réaut’s coat of arms symbolises the unprecedented union of winemakers from Bordeaux and Burgundy at the helm of one winery, making this estate a unique venture in Bordeaux’s long history. The vineyard’s ideal sun exposure and carefully selected grape varieties provide favourable conditions to craft wines of outstanding value.

All of Réaut’s wines display great aromatic structures, most notably CARAT de Château Réaut, which rivals some of Bordeaux’s best wines. Praised by wine critics, Château Réaut has received accolades for the quality of its production and is quietly making a name for itself in the region.

Inside information

Château Réaut’s unusual ownership structure is supported by an even more original community-based investment scheme bringing together over 420 private co-owners, wine professionals or simple wine lovers, from all over France and 15 different countries.

Fairly common in Burgundy but very rare in Bordeaux, this system allows the owners to finance part of the purchase through an Agricultural Land Group (GFA: Groupement Foncier Agricole). The success of their initiative was such that in less than 2 months 427 wine lovers had bought a share in the GFA, entitling them to 36 bottles a year. These shareholders are now Réaut’s most valued ambassadors. Every year they get together for a big harvest festival attended by over 500 people, a one-of-a-kind event in Bordeaux!
