Best of Class Trophy to 1847 Wines Lily’s Late Harvest 2016

Thursday night  (14th September 2017) was the night of nights for the Barossa winemakers and viticulturists as they dressed up in their formal attire for the Awards Presentation for the 2017 Barossa Wine Show held at Lambert Estate.  Our winemaker, Alex Peel, attended and was ecstatic to be there to collect a trophy for the 1847 Wines Lily’s Late Harvest Sweet white.  It was a fantastic result for our wine making and viticulture team and further gives us confidence that we are moving in the right direction crafting wines of elegance and finesse.  Further good news was the 1847 Wines Carawa Semillon also being awarded a GOLD MEDAL.  A great night for 1847 Wines!

History

Our home is the iconic Chateau Yaldara, near the southern Barossa town of Lyndoch.

Hermann Thumm founded Chateau Yaldara in 1947 after he migrated to Australia from Europe. The chateau was named ‘Yaldara’ after the local aboriginal word meaning ‘sparkling’. The site chosen for the winery was on the banks of the North Para River at a flax mill dating back to 1867.

Today, we keep his vision alive with estate grown, hand-crafted wines, locally-produced artisan foods and a truly Barossan visitor experience. Chateau Yaldara’s beautiful riverside restaurant, offers relaxed all-day dining, with a selection of dishes for any appetite.

The philosophy behind the Yaldara Wine Collection stems from its founder Hermann Thumm who first started crafting Barossa Wines in 1947 and was one of the regions first boutique winemakers.

Thumm pushed the boundaries of Australian winemaking through his appetite for experimentation with wine techniques, styles and blends. Today, we embrace this approach through the crafting of balanced, structural wines that showcase the harmony of varietal integrity from the select premium South Australian wine regions of the Barossa Valley, Eden Valley, Adelaide Hills, Langhorne Creek and McLaren Vale.

Vineyards

With over 160 years of winemaking heritage, the Barossa is one of the world’s most acclaimed wine regions.

It enjoys a Mediterranean climate characterised by cool, wet winters, with temperatures between 8°C to 20°C and warm, dry summers where temperatures are generally between 30°C to 35°C.

Nestled at the foot of the Barossa Ranges, the Rowland Flat sub-region is located between the towns of Tanunda and Lyndoch and is home to the 1847 Estate Vineyards. The sub-region covers a small yet unique area and is noted for the bright red colour of its soils. The soils are mixed with a wide assortment of roughly rounded pebbles, many of which are granitic and not found anywhere else in the Barossa.
