SIX NATIONS WINE CHALLENGE 2014  Sydney, Australia | 2014-10-08

On 8 October Matt Sutherland and Murray Cook, two of Dog Point's wine making team, attended a black tie dinner in Sydney for the Six Nations Wine Challenge 2014; where Dog Point Vineyards was awarded three trophies for its Pinot Noir 2012.  The Six Nations Wine Challenge is the only wine show in the world where wines are entered exclusively by invitation from the judges.

Dog Point does not normally submit wines to competitions but this invitation was an exception.  Dog Point was invited to enter this year by Bob Campbell MW; one of the Six Nations Wine Challenge judges involved in the event. Dog Point’s 2012 Pinot Noir was awarded the Trophy for Red Wine of Show; the Trophy for Pinot Noir and the Trophy for Wine of Show. This was jointly awarded to Dog Point Vineyard Pinot Noir 2012 and South Africa’s Silverthorn Blanc de Blancs 2011.

Vineyards

DOG POINT IS ONE OF THE EARLIEST PRIVATE VINEYARDS ESTABLISHED IN MARLBOROUGH’S WAIRAU VALLEY.

This means that Dog Point has some of the oldest vines in Marlborough.

The vineyard is centrally located at the confluence of the smaller Brancott and Omaka Valleys and is neighbour to the first commercially planted vineyard in Marlborough; planted by Montana in 1973.  This location is widely considered to be a very desirable area for grape growing in Marlborough.

Fruit for our wines is sourced from selected vineyard plantings dating back to the late 1970's. These older well-established vines situated on free draining silty clay loams are supplemented with fruit from closely planted hillside vines on soils with a clay loam influence.

Winemaking

Total involvement by the partners from the vineyard to the winemaking process through to the marketing of their regionally distinctive wines, ensures that Dog Point Vineyards remains a boutique and family oriented business producing wines with a clear point of difference. Our winemakers embody the spirit of quality winemaking by combining their experience and passion with old world philosophies and new world technologies.
