History

Le Domaine de la Pousse d'Or can be traced back to the Dukes of Burgundy and the year 1100. Since 1997, its new owner Patrick Landanger has invested considerable resources both in the vineyards themselves and in the arrangements for vinification and elevage.

In pursuit of ever-higher quality, he is animated by profound respect for his terroirs and this guides his ambition to share his passion for the great wines of Burgundy with the world at large.

The Estate of la Pousse d'Or dates back the Dukes of Burgundy, and it was already quoted in the year 1100 in capitular chapters.

According to historians, our wines were already known in the 4th century. By the 13th century, the King of France of then, Philippe-le-Hardi, had the 'Gamay' set forbidden to the profit of the 'Pinot' set so as to better guarantee the quality of our wines. Later, his grandson, Philippe the 6th of Valois, had himself offered 72 Volnay casks by the Duke Eudes, and had them sent to the Royal Court

Vineyards

Pousse d’Or has three premier cru monopoles, or exclusively estate-owned vineyards, in Volnay: ‘Clos de la Bousse d’Or,’ ‘Clos des Soixante (60)-Ouvrées’ and ‘Clos d’Audignac.’

Pousse’s attention to detail and dedication to organic viticulture (the estate is not certified but has followed organic principles for years) is serious. Vineyards are cared for without the use of pesticides or herbicides and are regularly plowed.

Grapes are harvested and sorted by hand, and bunches are destemmed and fermented on indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled tanks. Wines are aged from 15 to 18 months in French oak barrels, with between 30 to 50 percent new wood, depending on the cru. All wines are bottled by gravity and are unfined and unfiltered.

Winemaking

Elegant and well-balanced, the wines of La Pousse d'Or typify their terroirs.

Vines cultivated without chemical inputs, natural and unhurried vinification, maturation in oak barrels (30% new wood) for up to 18 months, and regular and scrupulous attention to working methods endow the wines of La Pousse d'Or with real potential for laying-down.

The 1966 Petrus is often overshadowed by the 1961 and 1964, however, it remains a great vintage that has held up well. It has a much more reserved earthier bouquet than those aforementioned vintages, more black than red fruit infused with clove, autumn leaves and mahogany bureau. It is beautifully defined and noble, offering ash-like/fireside hearth scents with aeration. The palate is extremely well balanced with fine tannin that are slightly drier and more rigid than the 1964. That said, this bottle demonstrates more flesh than the previous one a couple of years back, a gentle sprinkling of white pepper towards the statesmanlike finish. This benefits from time in the glass, stretching its arms to reveal a deeper, slightly gripper Petrus than initially observed. Outstanding. Tasted at the Petrus dinner at Hide restaurant in London.

Philipponnat Clos de Goisses 1998 / 94 points / Its grape-varieties are predominantly Pinot Noir, with the rest planted exclusively in Chardonnay. Always a vintaged wine, it is vinified according to the tradition upheld by generations of cellar masters and aged for almost ten years in the Philipponnat cellars which are excavated out of chalk. A powerful robust wine with a pronounced taste and lengthy finish.

Unico 2002, from the legendary Vega Sicilia winery, is only produced in exceptional years. This wine, made from mostly Tempranillo and a little Cabernet Sauvignon, is barrel-aged for a minimum of 10 years before being released. Intense complexity and layer upon layer of co-mingling flavors makes this an unforgettable wine. This wine will continue to age for many decades to come

The Oddero Vigna Rionda 2007 is a wine that gives pleasure once aged. Showing well today with a good 10 years on its shoulders with aromas of incense and floral elements yet fully structured. The Luigi Oddero estate started around 2004 after the brothers, Giacomo and Luigi, Oddero divided the property into two distinct estates - each of which produces incredible wines.

Clive Coates / MW, Wine Writer (France)  tasted  1 wines  from  Domaine de la Pousse d'Or  . In a tasting of  39 wines

But by and large the 2009 weather conditions could hardly have been better. August especially, in contrast to recent years, was magnificent. Remember the old saying 'Août fait le moût' (August makes (creates) the must). September was warm with a drying north wind, preserving the acidities which in the light of the fine weather and generous harvest might have begun to sink to levels close to dangerously low. In fact though these levels were not by any means high, apparently the pHs are quite normal. The fruit was so healthy it was hardly necessary to do a triage.

Romanée-Conti, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 2009 / Just a little less colour than the Tache. Not a lot on the nose at present. You have to go searching for it. What there is is very poised and very harmonious as well as being very complex and classy. The fruit is more red flavoured than the Tache. Marvelously fine and intense. Really quite excellent. 20 points

In Burgundy, 2010 prices rose, but not by much. Growers were already aware of the deficit in quantity when they announced their 2009 prices, so a gentle shading upwards (I speak in Euros), was the order of the day, except that the elastic between the village wines and the less fashionable premiers crus on the one hand, and the grands crus and top village premiers crus on the other, continues to widen. You will pay increasingly higher prices for Richebourg, Puligny-Montrachet, Les Folatières and Vosne-Romanée, Les Beaumonts, while Savigny-Lès-Beaune, premier cru and Paul Jacqueson's Rully, La Pucelles remain a bargain.

Markus Del Monego MW , Wine Writer (Germany)  tasted  1 wines  from  Domaine de la Pousse d'Or  . In a tasting of  9 wines

“A perfect setting was arranged by Maximilian J. Riedel at Schloss Leopoldskron close to Salzburg. The famous glass manufacturer opened his private cellar to accompany a perfect dinner. The tasting was completely blind, even the theme of each flight had to be found out. Options were terroir, producer, grape variety or soil. All the wines were served in Riedel glasses and the glass models proved quite helpful to find out the theme of each flight. A great evening with some surprises in the glass.
