History

It all begins in the first part of the twentieth century, after getting a heritage of some grape vines and buying some others, my great grandfather Etienne Sauzet created domain with the same name in Puligny-Montrachet (21190, Côte d’or, Burgundy).

After four generations and despite his demise since 1975, SAUZET are still 6 letters which ring as an homage at Chardonnay. At every moments, it’s a pride to walk on the mythics lands of Puligny, this ground, this earth which gave birth to our wines. This territory is a deep fastener in me, a direct link to my family.

I want to do a tribute to Etienne Sauzet first but also to my parents, Jeanine and Gérard Boudot who have done everything to raise the great reputation of the domain that it has today.

Our vineyard represents 10 hectares distributed on Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet.We take care of our grape vines, our land, the nature, which give energy to each piece of grapes then to every wine. Our work is respectful of what have been done before, a little step for future and we are proud to continue it…

Viticultural and vinification methods

The estate follows organic practises and has been converting to biodynamics since 2010.Harvesting is done manually and grapes pressed in a pneumatic press. Fermentation takes place in temperature controlled cellars using selected yeasts. The wine is left on its lees as long as possible. Wines are matured in barrels of roughly 25-50% new oak and bottled after a year and a half.

Size:8ha

Soil type: clay with limestone rock

Winemaking

Although the winemaking technique is more modern in the hands of M. Boudot, he is maintaining M. Sauzet's tradition of aging the wines on their lees for 10-12 months to "nourish them."

The wine is left on the lees as long as possible, in order to extract all the flavor and richness out of them. Boudot vinifies with natural yeasts, lowering the temperature of the cellar so that this takes place at 18-20 degrees C. Fining is with bentonite, and casein or col de poisson. Filtration is with lenticular filters which uses cellulose. Sauzet wines are superbly finished, fruity, full-bodied and authoritative examples of white Burgundies.

Inside information

The white wines of Puligny-Montrachet are probably the most famous and most widely acclaimed in the world. This is undoubtedly due to the local microclimates and the clay, siliceous sand and lime contents of the soil. The domaine of Etienne Sauzet is made up of 26 acres, much of it in the heart of the premier crus vineyards of Puligny- Montrachet. The average age of the vines is 30-35 years.

Gérard Boudot, owner and winemaker of Domaine Sauzet, is seeking "maximum finesse and an individual expression of the climate." M. Boudot, who married the granddaughter of the late Etienne Sauzet, runs the domaine and has modernized and improved the vinification, making the wines of this domaine among the most sought-after white wines of Burgundy.

The estate has been bottling 100% of its production since the early 1950's. Since 1975, the domaine has been selling the entirety of its production in bottle.

  • -Robert M. Parker, Jr.

"This is one of the most serious estates in Burgundy. The wines are usually among the very best made... They are textbook white burgundies, brimming with flavor, yet elegant and well-balanced."
