History

Local inhabitants identify the historic cascina or farmstead of the Agriturismo Marcarini by the name “Sargentin”.
The “Sargentin” was Vittorio Doglio, a man of small but of robust constitution who was a sergeant in the Savoy army in the second half of the 1800s. He added considerable wealth and prestige to the farm, which grew to be over 100 “Giornate Piedmontese”, or about 38 hectares.

The new land probably came into the sergeant’s possession through inheritance, since he was a descendant of the marquises of Mondovì. The territory was of considerable assistance in the launching of important farming, breeding and viticulture activities that characterized his life and that of his descendants.

Almost presaging the farm’s current activities, the “Sargentin” with his wife Domenica and daughter Teresa, distinguished by their joviality and warm hospitality, rented rooms tovacationers and to all those who underwent the Dolcetto and water cures.
The “Sargentin” left his son Giovanni (born in 1879) as single heir to the entire estate; Giovanni in turn left his son Vittorio (born in 1910) the farmstead and its management.

Enchanted by the beauty of the natural environment and of the house, we acquired the property in 1995 from Gerbi Doglio Nicoletta, widow of the prematurely deceased Siro Giovanni, Vittorio’s son and last descendant of the memorable “Sargentin”.

Vineyards

Our vineyard estates are the winery’s center of activity and bear prestigious names such as “Brunate” and “La Serra”, both situated in the area of La Morra, “Sargentin” in Neviglie – particularly adapted to the growing of the Moscato grape, “La Serra” and “Muschiavino” in the town of Montaldo Roero. Their position and inclination, the nature and composition of the soil, the exposure to the sun and the exceptional microclimate are all fundamental requirements to obtaining excellent wines. The different vineyards, all owned by Marcarini, are cared for with particular attention. A system of pruning aimed to limit the grape production has been adopted, as has a maintenance composting with organic substances. We practice a controlled grassing over of the vine rows, and the vine diseases are treated with products strictly based on traditional methods. The grape varieties grown are exclusively Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Barbera and white Moscato. Altogether, the estate covers a surface area of 25 hectares.

Winemaking

To better understand Marcarini Winery, one must look beyond its most contemporary aspects such as its modern vineyard and vinification equipment or a growing international market: one must examine its history and traditions. Today, as yesterday, Anna Marcarini Bava, with the collaboration of her daughter Luisa and son-in-law Manuel Marchetti, manage the family vineyards with passion, producing wine according to the most rigorous Piedmont and in particular Langhe tradition. This is the Marcarini Winery: its proprietors, vineyards, wine cellars, wines and history. A history made by intelligent choices and hard work, by technique and intuition, lived far away from the spotlight: a history for a passionate few, for friends who yearn for things made well and with heart. At La Morra, where the vine has since time immemorial dominated over other cultivations, the winemaker’s ancient spirit is revived daily, with the noble goal of capturing quality perfection in each of his wines.
