History

Medlock Ames is an estate fine wine producer located in Alexander Valley, Sonoma County, California. Started in 1998 by friends Chris James and Ames Morison, we consider our commitment to quality through mindful and organic farming to be one of our greatest assets. With Ames at the helm as our winemaker, our vineyards are farmed organically with no insecticides, chemical fertilizers or herbicides.

Solar power provides the energy we need to run. Only 55 of our 338 acres are farmed, we chose to leave the majority of land in a natural state - reserving the majority of our acreage for oaks and wildflowers, not vines. Innovative and traditional methods are used to farm this boutique vineyard where vegetables, olives and wildlife also flourish. The portfolio includes Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Red Bordeaux Blends, estate bottled olive oil, verjus and preserves.

• We farm and craft tiny production, high quality, artisan wines in an ethical way
• Our dedication to sustainability is a way of life, and we love what we do
• We are 100% organically farmed and 100% solar-powered and advocate progressive, creative farming
• Our eco-friendly ranch is tucked away on the edge of Alexander Valley atop Bell Mountain
• We are wine industry leaders in environmental accountability & sustainability

Vineyards

We believe in reviving elegance in agriculture and strive to maintain a natural balance in our vineyards and surrounding forest area. The land we farm is our greatest asset and we take every precaution to nurture and protect it. We’re small but mindfully farmed – only making wines from grapes we grow ourselves at Bell Mountain vineyard.

Bell Mountain is a special vineyard. It took us two years of searching to find the hidden parcel located at the southwestern tip of Alexander Valley - where it meets Knights Valley and Chalk Hill appellations and overlaps into the Russian River Valley. This vineyard is unlike any other and combines steep hillsides with growing conditions similar to that of Bordeaux – perfect for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc.

We chose to protect these unique attributes by farming organically - no artificial chemicals, fertilizers or pesticides are used to grow our wines. Instead, we promote healthy, living soil that nurtures, feeds and protects our vines and embrace age-old, low impact farming methods like animal husbandry, crop diversity and old-fashioned hard work. These natural, low impact farming methods allow the vineyard to shine through in the fruit.

Winemaking

Ames Morison is the winemaker and founding partner of Medlock Ames winery. A Virginian native, Ames graduated from Tulane University with a degree in Ancient History before working as a teacher in New York. His agricultural career began with a three-year placement in Guatemala with the Peace Corps. During this time, he worked with the locals using traditional, but often forgotten, modes of farming. This role nurtured a strong belief that modern intensive farming was a poor replacement for diversified agriculture that took a more balanced and sustainable approach to growing crops. This, and a lifelong fascination with wine, inspired Ames to found his own winery with best friend, Chris James.

After an intensive search, in 1998 he identified Bell Mountain Ranch in Sonoma County's Alexander Valley as an ideal site to develop a winery and organic vineyard with a keen eye to sustainability and open space as part of the development plan. Ames' approach to winemaking is to craft wines that are true to the vineyard's beauty. With this in mind, he and the vineyard crew, have been able to identify individual blocks that, over time, have brought forth amazing flavor and depth of character that showcase the signature Medlock Ames style.

Ames has worked in enological and production capacities at several Napa and Sonoma wineries as well as studied viticulture and enology at the University of California at Davis. He lives in Geyserville with Kate, his wife, and son, plus their Irish Terrier, Royal.
