The story of Relic is the story of us: Mike Hirby and Schatzi Throckmorton. We met in Napa Valley in 2000. Mike had just moved to Calistoga after a 2-year stint managing the wine program at the ahead-of-its-time restaurant Primitivo in Colorado Springs. Cooper vineyard is perched at 1200 feet elevation west of the town of Sonoma, above the famous Durell Vineyard and is the source of our Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. The vines are planted in volcanic rock. Here the birds are relentless, creating the need for netting the vines, but the effort is worth the trouble. The wine is complex, dense and elegant, with huge berry aromas and fine tannins.
