While wine making has been in the family since the 1800's, the winery just recently developed into a rising star over the past few years, adding another estate to the elite in the Nahe region. While father Hans takes care of the vineyards, wife Karin and son Tim are the winemaking team. With a low yield policy (average yield around 50 hl/ha) and the recent acquisition of more great vineyard sites to their holdings, the winery is well on the way to challenge top estates such as Dönnhoff and Schönleber.

The soils in the area consist of Porphyr, Melaphyr, weathered vulcanic rock, and a mixture of red loess, red slate, and blue slate from the devonian age.

While the dry wines are representatives of great quality, the noble sweet wines are among the best of the region. The estate has achieved numerous awards with Gault Millau and other German publications.

Low yields, great sites, painstaking vineyard management, perfectionism in the cave, and a veritable lust for minerality are the hallmarks of the style here. As for the most recent vintages from 2009 onward.... dare we say it? Schäfer- Fröhlich is making Rieslings as great—and in some instances better than—any producers in the Nahe. They are some of the most impressive and exciting white wines crafted anywhere.

Inside information

“Tim Fröhlich was in an extremely good mood as he pulled back the curtain on his stunning range of 2015ers.... The first Riesling grapes for the dry wines were brought in on the 10th of October this year and parcels were collected as they reached optimum ripeness over the course of the next thirty days, with the very last selections for the GG bottlings being brought in over the course of the first ten days in November. Contrast this with the harvest of 2014, when everything had be to be brought in between the 29th of September and the 19th of October, due to inclement weather and the pressure of rot and it is easy to imagine how much more relaxed the picking was here in 2015. Given fully six weeks to harvest in leisurely and precise fashion, it is not surprising that each and every Schäfer-Fröhlich 2015er that I tasted was showing beautifully and this seems likely to be one of the greatest vintages in the career (thus far) of Tim Fröhlich" -Importer

Markus Del Monego MW , Wine Writer (Germany)  tasted  6 wines  from  Schäfer-Fröhlich . In a tasting of  135 wines

As every year on the last Monday and Tuesday of August, the VDP showed a huge array of over 500 wines from the german Grand Cru vineyards, designated as Grosses Gewächs, in a preview tasting for professionals and the press. The tasting was hold on August 29 and 30, 2016.

As the sheer quantity of wines available was too much for a short tasting session, I focussed on the grape variety Riesling and on the rather classic areas such as Mosel, Saar, Ruwer, Pfalz, Rheingau, Nahe and Mittelrhein. From these wine regions I have tasted all Rieslings available. In addition I also tasted a small selection of Riesling from Rheinhessen. The tasting showed a very high and rather homogenous quality level due to good conditions in 2015 but also applied experience and knowledge of the vintners. A very successful tasting with highly recommendable wines.

Jason Lee / Sommelier, Pro (China)  tasted  1 wines  from  Schäfer-Fröhlich . In a tasting of  34 wines

“A great wine month: Dominus 2012 was one of the best together with La Mission 2010 vintage.”

Frank Smulders MW, Pro (Austria)  tasted  1 wines  from  Schäfer-Fröhlich . In a tasting of  8 wines

“Aaaaah, this is my wine. Maybe not so impressive in it’s texture, but the aromas…….yellow and green apple, pear, reine claude, gooseberry, cantaloup melon, grapefruit, muscaty flavours and on top some menthol-like, very fresh aromas. Unbelievable finesse and complexity. Sweet but in perfect balance with the acidity and not even close to sticky. Very expensive and worth every euro of it (APF) ”

Marie Ahm, Wine Writer (Denmark)  tasted  1 wines  from  Schäfer-Fröhlich . In a tasting of  11 wines

“Expressive nose of white flowers, fresh almond, dried orange peel, peach stone, freshly cut green grass and a dense minerality. A complexity so profound that it is almost impossible to grasp the potential of this wine. So harmonious for such a young wine. This a one of the most sensual and tempting young Rieslings I ever tasted. So complete, hugely structured and elegant at the same time! What an emotional experience!”
