Living in Umbria means paying tribute to the land every day, because it is thanks to our land that we are wine producers. Paying tribute to one’s land means ensuring that it produces today, and will continue to do so tomorrow for the generations to come, who will be the protagonists of the future.


For years we have been working every day here at Sportoletti, because the final product, our wine, perfectly expresses the territory from which it was born. Our Green Energy Project started in 2007, when we decided to install a photovoltaic  plant of 400mq.This has been in operation since July 2008, and allows solar energy to be automatically transformed into electrical energy, without the use of fossil fuels. Of the different choices available we opted for a partially integrated installation, with panels on the roof of the winery, thus limiting impact on the environment  as much as possible. The plant is of medium dimensions, with a production power of more than 40 kWp, which not only allows the business to be completely self-sufficient, but gives a surplus of more than 40%, which we can sell as clean energy.



The Sportoletti family, who have been farmers for generations, have always been passionately dedicated to wine production. Towards the end of the 1970s, the brothers Ernesto and Remo, reaping the benefits of what their father Vittorio taught them, decided to dedicate themselves exclusively to wine production. In 1979 the first one thousand bottles were produced with their own label. Since then they have constantly been researching the perfect balance between innovation and tradition, using their skills to take the best advantage of the potential of the land-the hills between Spello and Assisi- where their 30 hectares of vineyard are situated.


At present, five different  wines are produced: Assisi Rosso DOC, Assisi Grechetto DOC, Villa Fidelia Bianco IGT, Villa Fidelia Rosso IGT e Villa Fidelia Passito IGT. Over  the past ten years production has been stable at approximately  200,000 bottles per year. Since 1998 the company has had the excellent advice of the enologist and agronomist Riccardo Cotarella. On the borders of the national park of Monte Subasio, at about 500 metres above sea level, the company has approximately 2000 Moraiolo olive trees, the fruit of which produces an excellent Organic Extra virgin Olive Oil.



The business has approximately 30 hectares of vineyard situated on the hills of Assisi and Spello, all of which come under the Controlled Designation of Origin (DOC) of Assisi. The gradual process of renewal of the vineyards has brought about a more rational and improved viticulture, thanks to high density planting and “spur cordon” training of the vines, which allows easier control of the bud load, and consequently, of the  productivity of the plants. For the production of wines of superior quality, the bunches are thinned at the onset of ripening, so that average yield is approximately 1kg. per vine stock.


Among the vine varieties cultivated at the moment, there is the native Grechetto: we chose the plant clone G5, which is slightly less productive, but has a more typical character. Chardonnay, which is used for  Villa Fidelia Bianco, was planted at an altitude of about 500 metres, on the slopes of Mount Subasio. As far as red grape varieties are concerned, Merlot is of particular note. When the vineyards were renewed a clone from an old vine, which had belonged to the Sportoletti  family for over fifty years, was selected and propagated. Over the years, this has proved to be a winning asset for the business. We also preferred to plant new clones, which are less productive but richer in polyphenols, for Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
