“Do I need to tell you how much I adore Sylvain Cathiard's wines? This is a seriously good quality producer of Vosne-Romanée, one whose star is in the ascendant. These are gloriously silky smooth, complex wines; not just with the top Premier Crus but down to the generic Burgundy. It’s the intensity and focus that set Cathiard apart, wines with supreme definition and purity that seduce the palate like a beautiful courtesan. I would love to taste his Grand Crus, but they are incredibly rare and sought-after. This producer comes highly recommended from top to bottom.” Neal Martin:

History

The history of Domaine Sylvain Cathiard began in 1930 when Sylvain’s grandfather Alfred Cathiard who worked at Domaine de la Romanee Conti and at Lamarche was being given a humble plot in Vosne Romanee, he soon enlarged his holdings by contracting numerous metayage agreements with the Thomas-Moillard family. During that time, Cathiard was only selling its production to negociants but in the 50’s he and his son Andre started selling their wine under their name.

In the 1970’s Sylvain joined his father they managed to acquire the very sought after Cru Aux Malconsorts and in the 1980’s they expanded their holdings of 1er Cru les Suchots and finally in 1996 Sylvain acquired some of the Grand Cru Romanee Saint Vivant. In 2005 Sylvain’s son Sebastien joined his father being the 4th generation of Cathiards working in the estate. Since 2011, Sebastien has been fully managing the estate.

Vineyards

This small 5 hectares estate is surprisingly rich in terms of appellations, with holdings spread over the communes of Vosnes Romanee, Nuits-Saint-George and Chambolle-Musigny with a very interesting range of 1er Crus like the Nuits-Saint-Georges, Aux Thorey and of course some of the most praised Grands Crus such as the Romanee Saint Vivant and a small share of the Clos Vougeot. Most of the vines are between 40 to 60 years old.

Winemaking

The viticulture practices follow the Lutte Raisonnée principles, the vineyards are being ploughed and the use of chemicals is minimized. The policy is to find the perfect stage of ripeness since Sylvain is always seeking to keep certain freshness in his wines. A very careful sorting is performed in the vineyards and in the cellar, the overall winemaking remains traditional: the fruit is fully separated from its stalk, the berries will undergo a cold maceration for 7 days before the fermentation starts naturally under the sole action of indigenous yeasts. Sylvain Cathiard prefers his wines to be less extracted so he does not push the temperature; the resultant wines are pure illustrations of the terroirs’ fruits. The Grand Crus are aged in 100% new oak barrels, the 1er Crus in 70% new oak barrels and all are matured for 18 months.

Cathiard’s wines are renown for their natural harmony of flavours and their remarkable smooth texture. They impress by their balance between ripness of fruit and finesse, even the more masculine Vosnes Romanee Aux Malconsorts bears a fine delicacy with its firm but silky tannins.
