Winemaking Manager Tours Important Markets

During the final months of the year, our Winemaking Manager, Andrés Caballero, visited the U.S., Canada, and Brazil to show the new vintages of our main wine selections to the specialized media, promote the innovative projects the winery is developing, and to train our importers’ sales force.

New York, Toronto, and Sao Paulo are some of the cities where Andrés Caballero held important meetings and wine tastings to which renowned wine writers like Kim Marcus, Editor of Wine Spectator, Anthony Gismondi, and Ricardo Castillo, Editor of Prazeres da Mesa, were invited. During his trips, Andrés also visited points of sale and offered interesting seminars to the sales team of every importer.

History

Viña Santa Carolina was founded by Luis Pereyra Cotapos. He named the winery after his wife, Carolina Iñiguez. He hired a French winemaker – Germain Bachelet – in order to make top quality wines from Chile.

Santa Carolina is part of Carolina Wine Brands, one of Chile’s main winemaking groups. It is currently owned by the agro-industrial group Watt’s S.A., property of the Larraín family. With over 135 years of history, it is one of Chile’s oldest vineyards.

Viña Santa Carolina is Carolina Wine Brands’ emblematic brand, with strong presence worldwide. Its main markets are: Chile, Canada, and Brazil. In 2013, sales exceeded 1,6 million 9-liter cases, with a total income of over US$ 40 million.

Santa Carolina has a diverse portfolio, offering its consumers excellent quality wines in all price ranges.

Casablanca Valley

A valley located on the highway between Santiago and the V Region. Its winemaking activity began toward the end of the 70’s and is currently one of the fastest growing valleys. Its proximity to the ocean offers abundant coastal breezes with average temperatures of 15°C. This valley is characterized by the production of white varieties: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Gewürztraminer, as well as cold climate red varieties such as Pinot Noir.

This vineyard gives life to the Chardonnay varieties for the Reserva de Familia, Gran Reserva, and Reserva ranges. The Pinot Noir for the Reserva range is also born here.

Leyda Valley

Our vineyards are located in the Leyda Valley, 8 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean, 40 kms from Casablanca, and 90 kms from Santiago. This valley’s cold conditions during winter and summer, as well as the ocean’s strong influence and the soft summer breezes, make it an extraordinary valley for the production of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Riesling.

Our Santa Carolina Reserva Sauvignon Blanc emerges here.

Maipo Valley

The Maipo Valley is located between two mountain ranges: the Andes and the Coastal Range. Chile’s capital, Santiago, is located at the center of this valley with an ideal climate: dry, hot summers, and mild, moderately rainy winters. Over 650 meters (2133 feet) above sea level, the Alto Maipo area rises above the foothills of the Andes and is strongly influenced by the mountain climate. Large differences between daytime and nighttime temperatures promote complex wines with rich color and well-structured tannins.

The Los Nogales Estate is part of one of the oldest vineyards in this area. The main varieties grown are Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The grapes harvested here are used to produce the Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon, Reserva de Familia Cabernet Sauvignon, and the Specialties Coastal Hills Syrah.

Rapel Valley

This valley is located in the winemaking region of the Central Valley. Its vineyards are mostly between 600 and 1,000 meters above sea level. The diversity of microclimates allows us to grow many different varieties.

Withing the Rapel Valley, there are two distinct areas: the Cachapoal Valley and the Colchagua Valley, producing grapes to make Reserva de Familia Carmenère and Gran Reserva Petit Verdot.

Cachapoal Valley

The Cachapoal Valley has warm days moderated by cool nights that result from its proximity to the Pacific Ocean. Winters are cold and wet which allows for reduced irrigation during the hotter months.

The La Rinconada Estate, located in Pichidegua, northwest of San Vicente, has 260 hectares of vineyards. Here our icon wines are produced: Herencia (D.O. Peumo, a sub-appellation of this valley) and VSC.

Colchagua Valley

The Colchagua Valley is the largest and southernmost of the Rapel sub-appellations. Colchagua is closer to the lowest part of the Coastal Range and is benefitted by the refreshing sea breeze. This produces a long, slow ripening period. Temperatures vary quite a bit on any summer day, contributing even more to the expressive, fruity, well-balanced character of its wines.

The Miraflores and Los Lingues Estates are located at the foot of the Andes Mountains. They have very old vines, where the grapes for Santa Carolina’s quality wines from Colchagua are born, including the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in the Reserva range.

Maule Valley

This valley is located 250 kilometers south of Santiago and extends to Cauquenes in Chile’s VII Region. One of its main features is the presence of microclimates, with most rain falling between April and October, and a dry period from November to March. The soil has a fine clay texture, limited depth, and slow permeability.

These conditions have allowed for the development of red varieties with a strong varietal character, intensity, and balance, such as our Specialties Carignan.
