An excellent symposium was organized in the heart of the Baden vineyards promoting the wines of the Pinot family including the "adopted" family member Chardonnay. Over two days some of the best producers of the world showed fine wines on an extraordinary quality level. Freiburg in the heart of Baden has been the place and although most people would think of Burgundy as the historical first choice, the place for this Symposium is well chosen. After France and the US, Germany is on the third place with 12.000ha of vineyards planted with Pinot Noir. For Pinot Gris, the third place is also guaranteed and for Pinot Blanc, Germany is the world’s leading country with a surface double as large as the one of Australia and Italy, place two and three in the ranking. However the different masterclasses did not only show Pinots and Chardonnay but also some "comparative" varieties, which have also been noted.

As every year on the last Monday and Tuesday of August, the VDP showed a huge array of over 500 wines from the german Grand Cru vineyards, designated as Grosses Gewächs, in a preview tasting for professionals and the press. The tasting was hold on August 29 and 30, 2016.
As the sheer quantity of wines available was too much for a short tasting session, I focussed on the grape variety Riesling and on the rather classic areas such as Mosel, Saar, Ruwer, Pfalz, Rheingau, Nahe and Mittelrhein. From these wine regions I have tasted all Rieslings available. In addition I also tasted a small selection of Riesling from Rheinhessen. The tasting showed a very high and rather homogenous quality level due to good conditions in 2015 but also applied experience and knowledge of the vintners. A very successful tasting with highly recommendable wines.”
