History

Located 20 mins from the heart of Nashik city, our state-of-the-artwinery presents a breathtaking view of the tranquil expanse of the Gangapur dam backwaters. This is where our seductive wines with subtle flavours are made.

Our winery is designed on multiple levels where the various production areas of grape receival, crushing, red winemaking, white winemaking, barrel cellar, bottling & storage are located separately in a streamlined fashion. This helps us to transfer wine under gravity wherever possible without the use of pumps. The adverse effect of the vigorous nature of the pumps on the quality of the wines is thus avoided. The underground cellars provide perfect temperature and humidity conditions to age our bottled wines & reserve wines in oak barrels.

Vineyards

Our estate vineyard is a picturesque six acres expanse with a hill on the southern side and a lake on the north. The natural slope of the terrain allows good drainage of water in the soil contributing to the quality of fruit. The red soil is apt for growing grape varieties like Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc.

We employ modern viticulture practices of growing, pruning, spraying and management techniques to ensure that the fruit harvested is of the best quality.

The characteristic flavor profile of our wines are a product of the different microclimates and soils of our other vineyards of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc & Chenin Blanc that are scattered across the Dindori region of Nashik. The unique blend of the fruit from these vineyards along with our winemaking practices make our wines distinct in the Nashik Valley.

Winemaking

Our winemaking style is a combination of modern Australian & South African practices with some French Influence. This open minded approach along with the best Italian machines and wine storage capacity of upto 1 million litres has helped us consistently produce some of the best wines from the Nashik Valley.

Inside information

Since crushing our first grapes in back in February 2008, York Winery has been an incredible journey for us with many memorable milestones along the way. Being a family owned and operated winery; we have had the opportunity to experience these personally and up close.

We couldn’t have started our winemaking any better by our first 2 Estate Reserves winning a Gold and a Bronze medal at the Sommelier India Wine Competition 2009 in Mumbai. One of these wines even went on to win a Commendation at the International Wine Challenge in London in 2010. This legacy of producing quality wines even continues till today with 4 wines from our 2012 vintage winning medals at the Honk Kong International Wine & Spirits Competition.

We opened up our Tasting Room in July 2009. We wanted to showcase winemaking to the larger audience and break any inhibitions that they had towards wines. Even today at our Tasting Room we offer tours of the vineyards followed by a tasting carefully explaining to guests the intricacies of the winemaking process. Not only is this building Nasik as a wine tourism destination but also encouraging responsible wine drinking in general.

We launched our wines in Maharashtra in January 2010 have recently made our wines available in Delhi as well. We have also been exporting our wines to different parts of the world such as Japan, Australia, UK and West Africa. Globally India is a “New New World” producer so to speak. We are doing our best to showcase what can be achieved in such a exciting new terroir.

We shared our passion for good music with our own festival York Live in 2011 and 2012. We hope to do this again some time in the future again. Since 2012 Kailash Gurnani, the youngest qualified winemaker in India, has returned having completed his Oenological degree from University of Adelaide in Australia. His goal is to take the winemaking at York to another level having worked in different countries like Australia, Bulgaria and Cyprus.

This newsletter marks another milestone for us. This is an effort to reach out to anyone with an inkling interest in wines. Our effort will be to share our experiences about what we do at York Winery. Try to break any myths or notions about wine that people may have. This is an effort to reach out to wine consumers and interact with them directly.
