Domäne Wachau is one of Austria’s most renowned wineries, based in Austria’s most prestigious wine growing region, the Wachau. Steep terraced yineyards, a cool, marginal climate and meagre primary rock soils define the wines. “Federspiel” stands for dry, medium bodied and elegantly balanced wines of the Wachau.
Bruck is probably one of the most exciting and unique single-vineyards of the Wachau. It is situated on the very edge of Austria’s winegrowing zone. Thanks to the particular microclimate, the grapes in the south facing and steeply terraced Bruck-vineyard ripens beautifully. Wines from Bruck are characterised by distinctively cool scents and particular elegance.
The wine is lively yellow with green reflections. The distinctive “Bruck-style” is smoky with a precise structure and complex rich stone fruit aromas and exotic. The palate is balanced and elegant tasting of peach, ripe apricot and delicious apple. The persistent minerality and racy acidity are well balanced by this wine’s full-body and lasting-finish.
How to enjoy best
Serve well chilled at about 9 °C. Riesling Federspiel is a classic accompaniment to a wide range of fish, poultry and vegetable dishes or may be enjoyed as a sophisticated summer wine.
2018 was one of the hottest and most extreme summers, yet the wines display vitality and freshness. We would call it a “classic, balanced vintage”, as this corresponds to a cooler vintage style.
Compared to 2017, the alcohol levels are marginally lower, the acidity for Riesling is remarkably lively for such a hot summer. The final stage of ripening was slow and due to very early flowering, we had a long growing season. This naturally favoured continuous aroma development and promoted balance between acidity and sugar levels in the grape. All in all, the wines could be described as firm and elegant, combining a distinct and sappy texture with a crystal-clear aroma and complexity.
