The Story

Loibenberg is one of the ”Grand Crus” of Austria. The ancient dry stone walls (some are dating back to the 14th century) reach up to 420m above sea level. The soil is dominated by weathered primary-rock, the so called ”Gföhler Gneiss”, with layers of loess and loam. Warm pannonian airstreams make Loibenberg the ”hotplate” of the Wachau. Stretching out over more than 20 hectares, Loibenberg is one of the Wachau’s biggest single vineyards and is...

Written Notes

Medium-intense, yellow colour. Intense, broad, and elegant nose with appealing floral tones and honeydew melon notes. Dry, intense, fresh, concentrated palate. Oily mineral sensation on super-long lingering and harmonious finish that leaves floral, limey, and green apple tones in aftertaste. So settled and concentrated wine! Grand Wachau riesling with purity and complexity that will reveal its full potential in 10 to 15 years and last well over 2040! Decant now at least 3 hours and serve it with sterling white halibut with green apple, horseradish and lemon verbena.

Inside Information

"Warm and intense on the nose, ripe and concentrated white fruit aromas open the 2015 Riesling Smaragd Loibner Loibenberg, which is pure and citric on the nose and very inviting. Pure, fresh and piquant on the palate, this is rather coolish and stunningly lean and pure Loibenberg compared to the corresponding Grüner Veltliner. Lucas believes that Riesling has eventually stopped the ripening process during the vegetation period. This 2015 has grip and tension and a rather coolish character. Lucas Pichler has produced another outstanding collection. If there are vintages that remind him of the great 2015, it is 2009 and 1999." – Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
