Seña

In the Spanish language, the word Seña is rich with nuance and meaning. It implies a distinguishing mark or personal signature. Born in 1995, Seña is the first icon wine from Chile.

During his first visit to Chile in 1990, Robert Mondavi recognized the great potential for producing fine wine in our country. During his visit he met Eduardo Chadwick, whose winery, Viña Errázuriz, was founded in 1870 and has been producing quality Chilean wines since then. They discovered that they share a passion for wine and a philosophy of striving for winemaking excellence, and they thus formed a partnership for the production of Seña in 1995 the first icon wine from Chile.

Seña began as a symbol of the vision of these two winemaking families, and the fulfillment of their shared dream to realize the potential of the Chilean wine country by creating a truly world class wine.

Mondavi and Errázuriz teams search for Seña’s ideal terroir lasted four years and in September of 1999, the hillside vineyard was acquired. This unique property is located in the Ocoa District, at the western end of the Aconcagua Valley, 41km from the Pacific Ocean.

Seña Hillside Vineyard has 45 planted hectares of hillside vineyards planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Carmenère and Malbec. The vineyard is managed following the biodynamic principles. Led by Eduardo Chadwick, a talented team of viticulturists and winemakers is responsible for the development of Seña under biodynamic farming with the supervision of Alan York, recognized as an international expert on the subject.

Seña’s mission is to produce a world-class wine that captures the essence of the best grapes and terroir from the Aconcagua Valley. To achieve this, the winemaking team crafts Seña through a blend of six of the classic red varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carmenère, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Cabernet Sauvignon provides the structure while the other varieties add a subtle grace and elegance that classify Seña as a complex world-class wine.

The grapes for Seña are sourced from Seña Hillside vineyards within the Aconcagua Valley. The morning fog present at the estate and the potentially slower maturation patterns produce intense and distinctive fruit aromas that heighten the complexity of the blend.
