THE RECORD-BREAKING LEGENDARY COLLECTION OF ROBERT CAINE
Zachys once again proved itself as the premier auction house for single owner collections on Friday, February 12, as The Legendary Collection of Robert Caine broke auction records for Coche-Dury and achieved monumental results. This extraordinary session was the second day of Zachys’ La Paulée Auction in conjunction with Daniel Johnnes’ La Paulée de New York, and Burgundy lovers from across the country and around the globe converged on New York City for the single greatest collection of Burgundy ever to come to auction. The Legendary Collection of Robert Caine was 100% sold and surpassed pre-sale estimates of $1,798,100-2,754,450 for a total of $3,486,434; combined with Thursday, February 10th’s session the two day auction totaled $6,208,752 (versus estimates of $3,489,750-5,343,550).

Coche-Dury was the name on everyone’s lips on Friday morning, and in total the 109 lots offered sold for an astounding $917,785, well above the pre-sale estimates of $408,550-622,350. Record prices were achieved for Corton Charlemagne 1996, Corton Charlemagne 2000, Meursault Perrieres 1982 and Volnay Premier Cru 1999, among many others (see below). Historia

Domaine was founded in 1920 by Jean-Francois Coche grandfather. Jean-Francois took over the domaine in the mid-1970s from his father, Georges. Jean-Francois Coche was in 1975 married to Odile Dury and this led to the formation of Coche-Dury domaine. Nowadays, Jean-François Coche-Dury runs the domaine with the help of his son Raphae, who has been involved in work at the domaine since 1999.

Coche-Dury is by all standards one of the best producers of white Burgundy, a position he has occupied for more than 20 years. The most impressive is that he has done so without a large portfolio of Grand Cru vineyards. Coche-Dury has a rather modest production and maintains a very high quality – from AOC Bourgogne to the top of the range. Production approx. 4,200 cases annually.

Viiniviljelykset

The holdings amount to ~9 hectares with a portfolio including Corton Charlemagne, Meursault Perrieres, Caillerets, Narvaux, Rougeots, Vireuils and Chevalières plus more recently a Puligny Enseignières. There are also reds in Auxey-Duresses, Monthelie, Pommard and a 1er Cru Volnay which, yield permitting, can sometimes be split into Clos des Chênes and Taillepieds – the majority of cuvées by number are Meursault with 12 different parcels only one of which one is red, but a major portion of production is given over to generic regional wines including an Aligoté.

Coche-Dury put great emphasis on work done in the vineyards, when he is asked about his fantastic succes. There a no secrets he says, just hard work in the vineyards. The vines are pruned fairly heavily, and he only use “green harvest” very rarely. They use no form of pesticides in wine production at Coche Dury, fields plowed and cultivated very carefully to maintain the ecological balance.

The yields are low, partly from a high vine age, partly from planting density and particularly from short pruning – “green harvesting is already too late” – though he will still use it in extremis as in 2004. If JFC’s wines are famous for one thing (other than price) it is the oak treatment – some love, some hate. Clearly it is not such a high new oak percentage (around 50%), but given an average 22 months in barrel it is time enough for the oak to flex it’s muscles.

Viinivalmistus

Vinificationen is fairly traditional, but with quite frequent battonage. Fermentation takes place on oak cask, and the proportion of new oak varies from year to year, but generally Coche-Dury uses quite a lot new oak. In some years they have used up to 50% new casks on the top wines. The wines are raised in barral for 15 to 22 months, and are bottled without filtration.

Sisäpiiritietoa

According to Robert Parker, "Jean-Francois Coche-Dury is one of the greatest winemakers on planet Earth." Parker' impassioned reverence to this estate in the late '80s brought its appeal worldwide, but neither triple digit scores nor critical acclaim need speak for the insanely low yields and meticulous winemaking that give Domaine Coche-Dury its mystique.

Approximately half of the domaine's nine hectares of vineyards are situated around its hometown of Meursault, and although Coche is best known for Chardonnay, the domaine also bottles six exquisite Pinot Noirs. Famous for the extensive oak treatment and a staggering 22 months in barrel, Coche Dury's finest wines, such as Corton Charlemagne and Meursault Perrieres, have power, concentration, purity, and depth balanced by vibrant acidity for extreme longevity.
