Executive Wine Seminars Blind Tasting - February 06, 2007

98 Points "Deeply colored. Rich nose shows some sweetness with almost overripe honeysuckle, black cherry, dark plum, smoke, tar, tobacco, and mushroom notes. Simply profound in the mouth; extremely dense, complex, concentrated, and hugely extracted....There’s plenty of tannin, perfect acidity, and total harmony of flavors. The finish was very long with that wonderful fruit leading the way. This was a great, great wine tonight that will improve with time."

Wine & Spirits - October 2006

92 Points "When the wine is first opened, its red fruit saturates the tannin, the concentrated extract building to a knockout punch of flavor, the tannins massing into a hammerlock of mineral intensity. The flavors deepen to blackberry and resinous herbs, but air only makes the wine meatier. For the cellar."

Wine Enthusiast - R.V. - May 2006

95 Points "With its aromas of new wood, spice and black fruits, this promises from the start to be a powerful, polished wine. It is dense, very ripe, but still packed with tannins. It's a massive wine, bringing together the heat of 2003 with the big tannins of Saint-Estephe."

Decanter - April 2006

Decanter Award - Fiv "Strong youthful nose, some exotic spicy oak. Thick black fruit here. Great density, fabulously ripe Cabernet Sauvignon fruit. A sensational wine."

The Wine Advocate - Robert Parker Jr. - April 2006

The Story

The call of faraway lands. As mysterious and intriguing as a lone adventurer returning from a solitary sail, Cos d’Estournel is slow to reveal itself. Little by little, it evokes stories of distant places, market stalls brimming with unfamiliar fruits, spices and wares, village festivities warmed by the joy of revelers and the setting sun, and sumptuous visions of ladies and their voluptuous curves. A myriad of scents, colors and tastes appeals to the senses. The Grand Vin of Cos d’Estournel is both demure and deliberately sensuous, a fascinating and elegant nectar.

The vineyard of Cos spreads around the château on 91 hectares. The Cabernet Sauvignon vines (60% of the vineyard) find the soil of their choice in the thin layers of gravely soil situated on the top and on the southern slopes of the hill. On the other hand, the Merlot vines (40% of the vineyard) excel on the eastern slopes and on the slopes where the Saint-Estephe limestone bed shows on the surface.

The percentage of Cabernet and Merlot varies from one vintage to another according to the year weather conditions, benefiting successively to the one or the other. Plantation is extremely dense (8000 to 10000 vines per hectare) and the average age of the vineyard is high (35 years old on the average) in order to enable the roots to extend excessively and to obtain a very slender yield per vine that will create the « Grand Goût »

Each vine grower is in charge of 45 000 vines on which they have got to undertake various labours every year. These cultural tasks are for most of them done manually. The harvest is of course manually picked too. And it is by hand that the grapes, once collected in special wooden baskets, will be strictly selected.

Vuosikerta 2003

2003 was the hottest vintage ever seen in Bordeaux. The most successful châteaux have passed their exceptional 2000s and some claim to have made their greatest wines in living memory.

Very dry and extremely hot summer days and nights (16 days > 95°F compared to 2 in 2000, 6 in 2005, 4 in 2009). Need to eliminate the superscript here. I can't figure out how to do it.) The deeply colored reds, low acidities and high tannins are a departure from the classic Left Bank profile. St.-Estèphe and Pauillac are the most successful. The reds have largely reached their peak. It remains a controversial vintage, with opinions sharply divided as to its intrinsic quality. The white grape harvest began in mid-August. Rich, fatty whites, some acidified, not for long storage.

The extreme summer heat presented winemakers with a significant challenge. Sugar levels increased dramatically in late summer as some growers took the plunge and harvested early to preserve acidity. However, winemakers who waited until their grapes were fully ripe were rewarded with rich, concentrated, dark-colored wines displaying astonishing depth of fruit and plenty of complexity.

Generally speaking, the great wines of 2003 come from the northernmost communes of the Médoc: and in particular from Pauillac and Saint-Estèphe. Highlights include Lafite, Latour, Pichon Baron, Montrose and Cos d’Estournel. Quality was more uneven in the south of the Médoc although Château Margaux, true to form, produced one of the wines of the vintage.

The right bank properties of St Emilion and Pomerol, where temperatures were even warmer, produced inconsistent wines and volumes were massively reduced. Vieux Château Certan, which usually produces 4,000 cases per year, only produced 800 last year. Estates that have resisted this model and produced exceptional wines include Figeac, Ausone, Fetyit Clinet and Angelus.

Graves and Pessac-Lèognan fared better, but many châteaux produced wines that were alcoholic and expansive, but lacked the fresh, linear fruit core that distinguished the best of 2003. The exceptions are Haut-Bailly, the powerful and concentrated Domaine de Chevalier, and of course the thoroughbred stable of wines from Haut-Brion and La Misson Haut-Brion.

Tasted in November 2017. 68% C.Sauvignon + 30% Merlot + 2% C.Franc. Truffles, strong yet elegant, well matured, elegant and with round finish. 2003 was a vintage experiencing very high temperatures (+40 degrees C in August) and wines from this vintage won't keep for many years. I tasted this wine 5.6 years ago and it was fresher.
