History

Domaine Dureuil-Janthial in Rully ranks, along with Domaine Bruno Lorenzon in Mercurey, as the finest winery in the Côte Chalonnaise. The unparalleled range of white and red Rully produced by Vincent is a testimony to what a dedicated, talented winegrower can achieve in a lesser-known appellation.

Following a long lasting family tradition, Vincent Dureuil and his wife Céline took over the family estate in 1994. Since then, the couple has worked tirelessly to showcase the full potential of the rich terroirs of Rully and to raise the image of this historic appellation. The village of Rully is at the northern limit of the Côte Chalonnaise. Sitting on a similar south to southeast facing clay and limestone slope, and only a 15 minute-drive away, the premier cru vineyards of Rully share many of the attributes of the best sites on the Cote d’Or.

Vineyards

The Domaine counts 20 hectares split between the Côte Chalonnaise, Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. A large proportion of the vines are in excess of 50 to 75 years old. Domaine Dureuil-Janthial is without a doubt Rully's reference point, but what Vincent Dureuil achieves in Puligny-Montrachet and Nuits-Saint-Georges is also exemplary.

As all top domaines, the magic starts in the vineyards. Since taking over the estate, Vincent Dureuil has worked under organic principles and has adopted the best practices of modern viticulture.

Throughout the year all vineyard work is done following the lunar calendar. Pruning is conducted rather late using Guyot and Guyot-Poussard training on young vines, debuding is used to control yields and plowing of the soils is also performed to guaranty healthy aerated soils.

Every year all the grapes are hand-harvested when perfect balance of sugar and acidity is found.

Winemaking

The combination of thoughtful winemaking technics, meticulous vineyard practices and old vines contribute to producing wines of great richness and complexity. And it comes with no surprise that both reds and whites at this address are a go to for many of Burgundy’s top winegrowers, including Jean-Francois Coche of Domaine Coche-Dury.

Intense sorting mean only the best fruit makes it to the cellar where the approach is classic and minimalist. All movements of the wine follow the lunar calendar.

The reds are totally destemmed and go through cold macerated at 10 degrees for 8 days prior to fermentation. Fermentation begins with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled open-fermenters. After a second 10-day maceration the wine is moved to barrels, of which 25% are new, for aging. The wine is then transferred back to stainless steel before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.

The whites are whole-cluster pressed and settle for 24 hours before being transferred to barrels where fermentation begins with indigenous yeasts. About 20% of new oak is used on the whites. Like the reds, the white wines are transferred to stainless steel before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Inside information
