Vintage 2016

Bordeaux 2016 in review “A paradox”

by Andrew Caillard MW

The 2016 Bordeaux vintage will be remembered as one of the great years of the 21st century. I haven't been this excited about the prospects of wines this young since the remarkable 2009 and 2010 vintages. At that time, China was at the zenith of its extraordinary rise of fine wines where the highest estates, particularly Château Lafite , had become a backwater currency. Each man a...

Written Notes

Tasted in October 2019. Consistent notes. 47% Cabernet Sauvignon + 47% Merlot + 5% Petit Verdot + 1% Cabernet Franc. This wine showed great elegance and finesse, velvety texture, excellent balance and structure, and persistent fruity finish. Aristocratic wine with great complexity and excellent structure. Fabulous stuff.

Ruby. Scented, blueberries, cassis, floral and detailed nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fresh, fruity, anise and spices, detailed and layered, bright fruity, one of the greatest from here. 95

Deep colour. Very attractive pure blackcurrant inky aromas with espresso oak notes. Well concentrated pure blackcurrant, blackberry flavours, fine plentiful al dente touch bitter tannins and beautiful espresso roasted coffee nuances. Finishes long and sweet with lovely pastille-like notes. Lovely wine. Tasted at the Union des Grand Crus. 95 points

One of the great and positive surprises of the vintage 2016. Dark purple red with violet hue and black core. Excellent nose and concentration, dark berry fruit, crushed blackberries, blackcurrant jam, black cherries and sweet elderberries. The aroma of the nose is complemented by hints of dark chocolate, mocha and hints of black truffles as well as oriental spices. On the palate opulent and well structured with sweet fruit, dark berries and black cherries, vanilla and hints of gingerbread, rich dark chocolate nuances in the background. Tannins are perfectly ripe and the wine has a wonderful length. The best Beychevelle ever tasted en primeur. 96
