The Story

The 2013 is an inaugural release of Heitz Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Linda Falls — the first time we have introduced a vineyard-designated cabernet since 1989.

This is our Howell Mountain gem – Linda Falls Vineyard, named for the neighboring waterfall which tumbles towards the valley below. Since planting in 2002 we have nurtured this tiny vineyard, letting it reveal its distinctive character in its own time. It is now ready to step out onto center stage and become a single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon – the 4th in our history.

We set out to produce a cabernet that represents the concentration of Howell Mountain fruit with its inherent intensity of blueberries, augmented with the elegance of violets that typifies the balance and ageability of the Heitz style. The inky opacity of this wine sets it apart from our other cabernets and hints at its mountainous origins.

Tasting Notes:  The first thing you notice about this wine is its color – an inky opacity that sets it apart from our other Cabernets and hints at its mountainous origins. Alluring notes of blueberries and freshly-baked blackberry cobbler give the wine a spicy warmth. Full-bodied, with rich and lingering tannins, the wine evolves as it flows across the tongue, and finishes with a wonderful waft of violets, giving it a fresh lift. Truly a distinctive wine combining the concentration of Howell Mountain with the style and finesse you would expect from Heitz Wine Cellars.

Written Notes

Aromas of blueberries and black currants. Hints of fresh herbs, too. Full-bodied, layered and flavorful. Soft and delicious. Drink or hold.

  • 92p

Dark plum, charcoal embers, leather, licorice and lavender infuse the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Linda Falls Vineyard with tremendous depth and textural resonance. Deep and layered, with plenty of staying power, the 2013 has a lot to offer in a distinctly powerful, brooding style.

  • 93p

Dark, purple red colour. Intense, rich but elegant nose with ripe black fruits, vanilla and chocolate. Full-bodied, silky texture with gentle tannins, vivid acidity and intense ripe blackcurrant fruitiness. Long, smooth and vibrant finish. Very elegant wine!

  • 93p

The second vintage of our prized Linda Falls Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon brings the bold and rich characteristics of Howell Mountain into the spotlight. This wine has a deep ruby color with crimson and purple hues. Although opulent, there is a great brightness and youth to the color.

The aroma immediately blossoms with notes of ripe blackberry, blueberry, tart cherry, fresh plums and cassis, lifted by notes of vanilla and baking spices from oak aging. A white floral element lingers in the glass, as well as honeysuckle notes. A wisp of savory, herbaceous aromas add a depth of complexity.

Its full palate shows how refined and elegant a Howell Mountain wine can be; a firm tannin structure yet silky, with a juicy lingering finish. Undeniably made in the classic Heitz style, it has a livliness to it with balanced acidity. This wine is ready to drink now but it will continue to reward for the next 10+ years.
