The Story

JACOB’S CREEK Heritage range comprises the finest wines made under the Jacob’s Creek brand. Each Heritage wine honors a person and place in the rich history of Gramp & Sons winery that stretches back over 160 years.  Centenary Hill Shiraz pays tribute to Fred Gramp, who planted a Morton Bay fig tree at the site now known as Centenary Hill in 1947 on the 100th anniversary of the winery.

The distinctive personality of Centenary Hill Shiraz marks it as an outstanding expression of Barossa Valley terroir. Its style is densely textured, displaying rich plum and dark chocolate flavours with complex notes of spice and generous soft tannins.

The fruit for Centenary Hill Shiraz is sourced from old low-yielding vines – many of which are located near the banks of Jacob’s Creek at Rowland Flat, and some of which exceed 90 years in age. Hand-selected parcels from these vineyards are individually vinified and matured in new and one-year old French and American oak hogsheads for 20 to 24 months, with only the most exceptional barrels chosen for inclusion in the final Centenary Hill blend. The wine is also matured in bottle for a further two years prior to release.

Over the past 20 years the wine has earned over 550 awards including 12 trophies at domestic and international wine shows.

Representing the finest Shiraz made under the Jacob’s Creek label, Centenary Hill Shiraz is named after the place known as “Centenary Hill” which is a site of historical significance to our winery. Here in 1947 a single Moreton Bay fig tree was planted by Fred Gramp to commemorate 100 years since our winery founder, Johann Gramp, planted his first vines on the banks of Jacob’s Creek and started a winemaking legacy that endures today. Centenary Hill Shiraz was awarded the Barossa Trust Mark since 2014 which guarantees its top quality and genuine Barossa origin.

First vintaged in 1994, Centenary Hill Shiraz is a proud celebration of this unique part of the history of the Barossa Valley.

Wine Information

Vintage Conditions:

The 2008 vintage in the Barossa Valley was a tale of two halves. The Barossa’s Mediterranean climate typically features good rainfall in winter and spring. However, in a repeat of the previous season, the winter preceding the 2008 vintage was unusually dry. More typical rainfall patterns returned in November, which helped the vines to develop good canopies. From then on conditions remained warm and dry, with no pest or disease issues, and vine development was advanced by a week to ten days on average. While the 2008 vintage will long be remembered for the extended heat wave which occurred in early March, the entire season was in fact also warmer than normal, and this proved a godsend for Barossa Shiraz by ensuring most if not all of the blocks were at their optimal ripeness before the heat wave. For this reason Barossa Shiraz from the 2008 vintage now appears destined to be remembered for all the right reasons, with rich, ripe and powerful wines showing intense colours and great depth of flavour.

Inside Information

Winemaking:

Regular visits by our winemaking team ensured that the chosen blocks were harvested at optimal ripeness. The parcels were crushed separately into either wide based static fermenters or, in the case of the smallest parcels, traditional open concrete fermenters. Fermentation temperatures were allowed to peak at around 28ºC early in ferment and then maintained at a more moderate 20–22ºC range. The parcels were drained and pressed separately into carefully selected new French and American oak hogsheads (51% French, 49% American), which allowed for the integration of oak and fruit characters during malolactic fermentation. The parcels were racked after the completion of malolactic fermentation and then returned to the same hogsheads for a total of 22 months’ maturation. Bottling took place in July 2010 with subsequent bottle maturation for 18 months prior to release providing additional complexity and further integration of oak and fruit. A small, harmless deposit of tartrates may form in the bottle, so decanting the wine before serving is strongly recommended.
