The Story

This wine made its debut in 1988 by winemaker/designer Mitch Cosentino. This is the third vintage of M. Coz that has been made under Cosentino's PureCru brand since 2009. It continues the tradition of only being bottled in extremely limited quantities when it is equal or superior to the greatest wines in the world made with Bordeaux red grape varietals.

Prior to release, this wine has already won a major wine competition, Gold Medal, Best of Class award, as has virtually every previous vintage.

Vintage 2013

Blend: 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc, 18% Merlot, 9% Petit Verdot

Ageing: 39 months in French oak barrels

Production: Less than 200 cases

Style: An intense and focused Bordeaux styled Meritage with a heritage going back to the original 1988 vintage. Aromas of currants, berries, plum, and spices abound. Rich and full on the well textured palate that shows balance, power and elegance. Overall it unfolds throughout to a long satisfying finish.

Winemaking: Each lot was punched cap fermented and finished in barrel where it was aged for 34 months unracked. Then the blend was made into tank and left to evolve for two months then bottled unfined.

Written Notes

Dark, intense ruby colour. Complex nose with loads of flavours from jammed plums and dark cherries, raisiny spicy aromas on the second nose. Full-bodied, intense, fresh and crisp palate with ripe cherry fruit, smoky tannins, vanilla and long refined mouthpuckering spicy finish. A great wine with full of soul!

Tasted twice in the same day...when first opened, and then 3+ hours after opening and decanting to get it some air. 

Color: Beautiful, clear, bright medium-dark garnet

Nose: When first opened, cedar, cassis, mixed berry & cherry fruit. A hint of pencil lead. Light spices & herbs, a hint of hint. Fairly deep but with an underlying elegance. Three hours after decanting, add notes of coffee and a hint of anis. Very rich and full. Extremely alluring.

Palate: When first openeed, sweet soft fruit on the front and middle of the palate, fading into more subdued elegance on the finish. Maybe a touch of alcohol on the finish (not surprising, given 14.8% alcohol. However the wine carries it well. Extremely well balanced. Again, 3 hours after decanting, the sweet, soft fruit blossoms out. Medium (but soft) tannins present. Cassis & a hint of plum, along with cedar, oak, and tobacco. Extremely complex and refined. The hint of alchol fades with more exposure to air. Very mouthfilling and chewy. Balanced for aging.

94 Points. At $125, and with less than 200 cases made, this wine is not for everyone. If you can find it (and affortd it), you won't be disappointed.

Smells of anise and lots of mixed berries once it finally opens up. A little forward on the alcohol but has a good cedar nose as well.

Chewy & full bodied but still, a little hot. Tasted after three hours of decanting; could use another 5 years in the bottle, if not longer. Still went well stuffed peppers now!
